Description of Job
This position reports to the Utility Plant Operator II and provides steam for campus. It operates manually and through the boiler plant manager system, boilers, steam generators, water treatment equipment, air compressors, pumps and associated equipment for proper boiler plant operation and steam system distribution. It visually inspects and tests the operation of valves, meters, gauges, levels, tanks, traps and equipment noting malfunctions and making any needed repairs or adjustments. It logs readings, records and enters data, fills out Colorado Air Pollution Control Division Air Pollutant Emissions Notice (APEN) forms. Responds to corrective maintenance activities.
A. Boiler/Utility Plant Operator
Independently operates, monitors, services and repairs plant equipment, including steam boilers and all associated ancillary equipment to provide steam for buildings and processes. Generates logs, schedules, and preventative maintenance tasks. Meets with the boiler inspector for annual inspections. Orders parts and materials need to maintain the boilers, steam generators, pumps, pressure regulators and chemical treatment based on manufactures recommendations, history and usage.
Relays operational and equipment changes, and control procedures in association to the Heat Plant equipment. Collects and records temperatures, pressures and flow rates on all systems, verifies shift and daily production goals. Tests, analyzes and records chemical content in various steam and water systems, follows chemical treatment program guidelines, and adjusts chemical dosages and feed rates. Manipulates the Boiler Plant Manager software to compensate for equipment or sensor failure.
B. Miscellaneous
Preform corrective maintenance activities in other buildings which require operating a university vehicle to transport tools and equipment. Tests steam traps, verifies operation of safeties, reads meters, and inspects piping for leaks. Other duties as assigned.
Please note: This position is eligible for shift differential, as follows:
Regular rate applies when work hours fall between 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (no shift differential).
Second shift differential rate (7.5%) applies when half or more of the scheduled work hours fall between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
Third shift differential rate (14%) applies when half or more of the scheduled work hours fall between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Weekend differential rate (20%) applies when more than half of the scheduled shift hours fall on a weekend shift. Weekend shifts start at 4:00 pm Friday through 6:00 am Monday

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience Only:
+ Four years of progressively responsible Boiler Plant operations experience, such as steam production, heating plant experience, steam/hot water boilers.
+ Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
+ Computer experience is required in order to process work orders and prepare documents.
+ Must be a current employee at Colorado School of Mines.
EXPERIENCE MUST BE CLEARLY DOCUMENTED IN WORK HISTORY SECTION OF APPLICATION.
OR
Education and Experience:
A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years(TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE ATTACHED FOR EDUCATIONAL CREDIT). Must be a current employee at Colorado School of Mines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Stationary Engineers License preferred
+ Two years journey level experience
+ Prior relevant state experience
