We are currently searching for the best talent for **Executive Director, Head of R&D Office.**
Purpose:
The Executive Director, Head of R&D Office, will serve as a key advisor and partner with the Global Head, R&D Strategy, Portfolio & Operations (SP&O) and Executive VP, R&D to amplify the R&D mission and strategy. This role will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the R&D Senior Leadership Team (SLT), enterprise deliverables, internal and external engagements, communications and partnerships such as town halls, Global Scientific Symposium, SAB, etc. to amplify and drive consistent messaging on our strategy. This leader will also play a critical role around broader strategic and operational projects and workstreams across J&J IM R&D. The Executive Director, Head of R&D Office, will also need to act as a bridge between R&D and other business functions such as Commercial, Communications and Finance to facilitate collaboration and alignment on deliverables.
The J&J Innovative Medicine R&D organization is an organization of 13,000+ people with an operating budget of $8B+, which includes an industry leading R&D portfolio of 4 Therapeutic Areas (Oncology, Immunology, Neuroscience, and Cardiopulmonary) and 14 Disease Area Strongholds, and Global Functions (Development, DPDS, Regulatory, Data Science).
This position leads the R&D office members to enable excellence within SP&O by driving the end-to-end R&D strategy, maximizing synergies across JRD TAs/Functions and ensuring coordination of key objectives and events across TAs and functions.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
+ Work closely with Global Head, R&D SP&O and the Executive VP, R&D to develop and deliver the long-term Pharm R&D strategy.
+ Lead the development and execution of the annual R&D Goals & Objectives, across the 3 “Ps”, Portfolio, Process and People, ensuring connectivity and delivery through-out the year.
+ Demonstrate strong leadership by working independently through the matrix to deliver on the R&D priorities as well as managing a team to support that effort. Be a key thought partner to the Global Head, R&D SP&O
+ Demonstrate strong leadership in managing change and complexity, manages increasing complexities and scope of business to achieve IM R&D strategic goals with greater impact and ability to navigate and lead in complex and matrixed environment
+ Lead and oversee execution of key activities and meetings including the R&D SLT (retreats, meetings, off-sites, global site visits), CEO Reviews, Board meetings, Senior Leaders Meetings, Scientific forums (e.g. Global Scientific Symposium, Global Scientific Forum), R&D town halls, and other events as they arise.
+ Lead R&D’s strategic agenda (on behalf of the Executive VP, R&D) at the GOC including planning agendas, annual TA reviews, and monthly portfolio updates – working closely with the GCSO organization. Ensure R&D’s strategic and operational agenda is appropriately shared at the GOC and support the operations of managing the GOC updates on behalf of R&D.
+ Partner closely with Communications to ensure clear and consistent communication of the Innovative Medicines R&D strategy to multiple R&D and J&J Enterprise organizations and committees, which aligns with the Enterprise Strategy. Consolidate input from across the therapeutic areas, functions and R&D partners to ensure that all views are represented.
+ Support the development and messaging of external presentations, conferences and business meetings for the Executive VP, R&D
+ Optimize R&D chief’s scheduling at medical congresses, in collaboration with medical affairs, investor relations and other stakeholders
+ Lead and partner with collaborators across the J&J organization to implement key end to end strategic initiatives across the R&D organization.
+ Gain and incorporate deep external insights into the long-term view of healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry to bring that knowledge into R&D to guide the R&D strategy. Expertly manage and interact with external entities such as management consulting firms and subject matter experts as necessary.
+ Develop, coach and engage direct reports, and build a diverse bench strength for the future.
Qualifications:
+ PhD/MD/PharmD/MBA or equivalent preferred
+ Minimum of 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech R&D environment
+ Experience developing and executing strategies into deliverable actions
+ Experience leading change initiatives in an R&D organization(s)
+ Significant experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in the analysis and synthesis of complex data towards the goal of building and executing on key strategies
+ Deep knowledge of the drug discovery and development process
+ Demonstrated ability to lead others through direct reporting and/or matrix to deliver outstanding results
+ Ability to translate data into information and strategies into executable action plans
+ Travel requirement of 25% domestic and global
+ Located at one of Innovative Medicines R&D sites in NJ or PA; preferably Titusville, NJ or Spring House, PA.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
$193,000 - $333,500
Additional Description for Pay Transparency:
The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis. Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance. Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)). This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.
