The ideal candidate is a self starter with a proven track record of boundary-pushing fashion storytelling and digital and social-facing content creation. They will work hand-in-hand with Social, Photo and Design teams to ensure our fashion and style stories shine in every medium. They will thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment, and be ready to push a strong brand forward with infectious energy and enthusiasm.
WSJ. Magazine sets the bar in defining luxury style, providing best-in-class fashion editorial and muscular feature journalism to an affluent global readership. The ideal candidate will be able to tap into that audience: brimming with ideas for luxury and contemporary fashion content that resonates on social and digital platforms, and excited about honing a tonal and visual identity, one consistent with the creativity, sharp wit and good taste that the WSJ. Magazine, Off Duty and Style News teams offer.
This is a full-time position based in our New York office and reporting to the Style Director of WSJ. Magazine.
You will:
+ Under the Style Director, oversee production and delivery of exciting luxury and contemporary fashion and style content for WSJ. Magazine and WSJ’s Style section across all platforms.
+ Manage, motivate and set a daily workflow and agenda for a team of eight, working across men’s and women’s fashion markets, with a particular eye and expertise on how luxury and print-included storytelling will ultimately live across digital and social platforms.
+ Demonstrate proven ability to attract and retain large digital followings and audiences with best-in-class, top-caliber luxury fashion editorial ideas and execution.
+ Use proven expertise in digital-first content creation to optimize the fashion closet as a content-creation studio, and devise strategies and workflows for ensuring the entire Fashion Team is delivering best-in-class social content and assets. Generate ideas and supervise fashion-team workflow to execute audience-first fashion strategy, with emphasis and experience in vertical video.
+ Serve as a proxy when Style Director is traveling.
+ Streamline workflow logjams and solve problems on large-scale fashion shoots or everyday fashion-market work with a large roster of industry contacts and proven history of organizing complex fashion-luxury multimedia in a fast-paced creative environment.
+ Work closely with newsroom and magazine editors, serving as sittings editor on portrait shoots for style newsmakers and personalities, including on heavily embargoed or securitized shoots. Travel as needed to location shoots.
+ Supervise the creation of beauty, wellness and contemporary-price point market work, broadening the remit of the Fashion Team by knitting all coverage areas together for the first time under the Style Director. Bring knowledge of best-in-class beauty and wellness journalism to build content across platforms.
+ Bring proven experience on developing shopping editorial into a multimedia, highly engaged content strategy, including melding reader interest and luxury commercial objectives in creation of beautiful, best-in-class shopping storytelling and styling.
+ Under the Style Director, devise and implement a data-driven, reader-first gift guide audience strategy.
+ Bring energy and creative flair to growing the digital fashion storytelling of the overall WSJ. Magazine brand.
+ Ensure the top-tier execution and ethical standards of WSJ. Magazine and the wider Wall Street Journal are consistently met: that work is of impeccable quality across all platforms, and that The Journal’s codes of conduct, risk and compliance protocols and overall Standards & Ethics rules are scrupulously met across all systems and shoots and with business partners.
You have:
+ 7 to 15 years experience in a fast-paced style and fashion environment creating digital content, managing creative teams and working with luxury fashion partners to execute multimedia content initiatives.
+ A sharp sense of what our digital audiences are consuming and sharing, and how to connect with them.
+ A deep understanding and knowledge of men’s and women’s fashion markets.
+ Flawless project-management skills, and the ability to juggle multiple time-sensitive projects and duties at one time.
+ An outgoing personality and a thoughtful, detail-oriented managerial style that will energize three direct reports and manage an overall team of eight.
+ Sound editorial judgment and a clear understanding of WSJ’s publishing standards.
+ Experience managing a budget is preferred but not required.
To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and a link to a portfolio of a few relevant work samples. If necessary, include a very brief description of the role you played in each example.
The Journal’s reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards. We report without fear or bias, and we maintain a proper sense of perspective, detachment and objectivity in our reporting.
