    Job Description

    THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSITION FOR CURRENT 'LANDMARKS PRESERVATION COMMISSION' EMPLOYEES ONLY.

    The Agency

    Created in 1965, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is the largest municipal preservation agency in the nation. It is responsible for protecting New York City's architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings and sites by granting them landmark or historic district status and regulating them after designation. The agency is comprised of a panel of 11 commissioners who are appointed by the Mayor and supported by a staff of approximately 80 preservationists, researchers, architects, historians, attorneys, archaeologists, and administrative employees. There are more than 38,000 designated buildings and sites in New York City, most of which are located in 158 historic districts across all five boroughs.

    The Team

     

    The Preservation Department is responsible for reviewing permit applications from property owners, issuing permits for certain kinds of work to landmarked buildings and sites, and preparing applications for review by the full Commission.

    Your Impact

    The Deputy Director of Preservation supervises a team of preservationists reviewing permit applications from property owners, issuing permits for certain kinds of work at designated buildings and sites, and guiding applicants in preparing presentations for review by the full Commission. Deputy directors meet regularly with their teams to discuss and review these applications. Deputy Directors have the opportunity to advance their skills and experience by handling complex or large applications; making presentations to the Commissioners at Public Hearings and to the public and other agencies at outreach and community meetings; and assisting the Director of Preservation in managing Public Hearing agenda items, directing the administrative organization of the department, developing efficiency strategies and developing policy and rules for work on designated properties.

    Your Responsibilities

    Under the supervision of the Director of Preservation, the Deputy Director of Preservation trains, coaches and manages a staff of Landmarks Preservationists in their review of applications to restore, rehabilitate, or correct violations issued on Individual Landmarks and properties within historic districts; provides technical guidance to the staff on preservation best practices, maintains mastery of the regulatory Rules and trains staff on updates as needed, and communicates regulatory policy to the staff and applicants as articulated by the Director of Preservation; accompanies staff on site visits; utilizes statistical and database reports to help identify short term and long terms goals of the department and to conduct staff evaluations; monitors and tracks projects assigned to their team and regularly reports on staff workload, productivity and overall performance; intercedes on problematic applications and deals directly with applicants to resolve issues. Performs other duties as assigned.

    PREFERRED SKILLS

    The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

    - Demonstrated expertise in the field of historic preservation and the Commission’s regulatory work

     

    - Management or Project Management experience

     

    - Excellent written and verbal communication skills

     

    - Experience with data management

     

    - Strong customer service approach

     

    - Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently

     

    - High level of professionalism and leadership experience

     

    - Supervisory experience

    Qualifications

    Qualification Requirements

    1. A Master's Degree from an accredited college with a major in historic preservation, architectural history, art history, architecture or civil engineering and five years of full-time paid experience in architecture, restoration or preservation of historic structures, research in architectural history or in teaching architecture, preservation or architectural history, at least two years of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or

    2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a major as described above and six years of experience as described above, at least two years of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or

    3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" and "2". However, all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree as described above and at least two years of full-time paid experience as described above, one year of which must have

     

    been in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
