    Description

    Robert Half Management Resources is recruiting a Controller to support our Not-for-Profit client on a 2+ month on-site engagement based in the West Los Angeles area. The Controller will report directly to the Director of Finance and will primarily be responsible for leading core financial operations of the non-profit.

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Oversee the monthly financial close process, ensuring accurate journal entries, reconciliations, and timely reporting.

    + Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports for internal teams and stakeholders.

    + Provide support for Board of Trustee Committees (Audit, Finance, Investment).

    + Manage all aspects of the annual financial audit, including preparation of lead schedules, fieldwork coordination, and annual accrual entries.

    + Handle supplemental audits (e.g., Workers Compensation, 403(b) plans, Energy benchmarking, local/state compliance).

    + Support the Financial Assistance Program, including reporting, application reviews, software updates, inquiries, and family communications.

    + Act as a member of the Financial Assistance Committee.

    + Manage billing systems such as Blackbaud Tuition Management, as well as proprietary systems.

    + Track contribution income, pledge receivables, and ensure reconciliations for all fundraising campaigns.

    + Support the Parents' Association with financial systems and monthly reporting.

    + Ensure internal controls by reviewing and approving journal entries while supervising accounts payable, payroll, bank reconciliations, and treasury functions.

    + Provide backup support for specialized accounting tasks such as treasury management and payroll processing.

    + Collaborate with the Director of Finance on budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling.

    + Take on special projects to support the broader Business Office as needed.

    Requirements

    + Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (CPA or MBA preferred).

    + A minimum of 5+ years of accounting experience, with 2+ years in a supervisory/management role.

    + Previous experience in a non-profit or independent school setting (strongly preferred).

    + Strong team leadership and the ability to foster a positive, collaborative environment.

    + Technical expertise in systems like Blackbaud (dual-entry accounting software), MacOS, Google Sheets/Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. Familiarity with tools like ADP or similar HRIS platforms is a plus.

    + Intermediate to advanced spreadsheet skills (e.g., financial modeling and scenario analysis).

    + Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

    + A critical thinker with exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

    + Effective communication skills, with a professional and empathetic approach to interacting with faculty, staff, vendors, parents, and visitors.

    + Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information appropriately.
