  • Sr. Process Safety Engineer, Global Process Safety…

    Amazon (Nashville, TN)

    Apply Now

    Description

The Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Facilities, Engineering, and Construction (FEC) organization is looking for a Process Safety Engineer to lead the safe design and operation of systems involving Highly Hazardous Chemicals (HHCs)—including hydrogen, lithium-ion, ammonia, and compressed natural gas—across our global operations. This role directly supports Amazon’s 2040 Climate Pledge by enabling the responsible deployment of alternative energy technologies.

You’ll work across engineering, operations, and construction teams to integrate Process Safety Management (PSM) from design through execution. Your work will shape safety outcomes at a global scale and ensure that new technologies meet strict internal and external standards. This is an opportunity to lead, influence, and innovate in one of the most dynamic safety engineering environments in the world.

This role is grounded in technical leadership. You’ll be responsible for aligning risk controls with best practices and regulatory frameworks, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) PSM standard, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Risk Management Plan (RMP), Seveso III Directive, and international standards such as ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), ISO 31000 (Risk Management), and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management).

    Key job responsibilities

    • Process Safety System Design: Evaluate design of safety systems for hazardous chemical infrastructure, measure risk against Amazon’s risk matrix and reduce elevated risk to ALARP (As low as reasonably possible) with engineering followed by administrative controls.

    • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA): Evaluate existing and develop new piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), facilitate HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies), LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis), using P&IDs as a foundational reference. Ensure all recommendations are tracked and resolved as per Amazon’s CAPA timelines.

    • Risk Management and Control Strategy: Develop protection strategies aligned with ISO 31000 and OSHA PSM standards. Combine technical and procedural layers to reduce risks to acceptable levels.

    • Regulatory and Standards Compliance: Ensure global compliance with OSHA process safety management (PSM), EPA risk management plan (RMP), Seveso III Directive, and ISO standards. Stay current with evolving requirements and apply Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP).

    • Management of Change (MOC): Review proposed engineering or operational changes for safety impact, ensuring updates are accurately reflected in piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs). Confirm updates are captured in design, documentation, and operations.

    • Test Planning and Validation: Execute Pre Startup Safety Review (PSSR) to confirm that key safety systems operate as intended when a MOC is executed or at launch.

    • Tool Development and Standardization: Build scalable tools and mechanisms to standardize hazard evaluation and compliance tracking in line with industry best practice, OSHA guidelines, Center for Process safety (CCPS) and American Institute for Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

    • Governance and Framework Development: Develop and maintain a robust RBPS governance framework, including tools and processes that foster standardization and continuous improvement with role clarity and a defined RASCI.

    • Alternative Energy Safety Oversight: Provide subject matter expertise for hydrogen, ammonia, lithium-ion, and compressed natural gas systems. Drive the safe design, commissioning, and operation of these systems in collaboration with external partners and internal teams.

    • Incident Investigation and Corrective Action: Lead or contribute to incident investigations. Apply methods such as FMEA, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), TapRooT, Bowtie to identify causes and drive improvements.

    • Safety Metrics and Reporting: Define and track key safety indicators in line with business goals. Report progress toward safety maturity and performance goals.

    • Collaboration and Knowledge Transfer: Support engineering, construction, and site teams through training, mentorship, and technical guidance. Support the development and implementation of each pillar of OSHA-PSM.

    • WHS Integration and Emergency Readiness: Work with WHS teams to integrate process safety into broader safety systems. Ensure emergency plans are in place for hazardous systems.

    A day in the life

You might lead a HAZOP for a new hydrogen facility, review controls for a lithium or compressed natural gas storage site, or help investigate a safety event. Every day, you’ll collaborate with committed teams to solve complex problems and raise the bar on what safety looks like at scale.
