The Strong’s technology team delivers secure, dependable, and high-quality technology systems and services for museum staff, events, and facility rentals. The director of technology is responsible for managing, operating, and maintaining computing and telecommunications devices, equipment, and services that meet the needs of museum staff and guests. This position works closely with all members of the technology team to provide secure and reliable technical support, training, and innovation for all current and future technology infrastructure.
This position requires a highly skilled individual charged with strategic planning and operational decision-making to fulfill strategic goals, a strong service-oriented attitude and excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to lead a team under tight timelines and competing priorities. The director of technology is required to expend such personal efforts as may be needed to keep up with advances in subject matter information related to this position. The employee must learn the constraints, with particular consideration of the budget, within which this job must be performed and work within those limitations.

+ Direct and oversee the overall technological components of the museum, including application infrastructure, network infrastructure, hardware components, and security controls.
+ Manage the work of the technology staff: monitor and assess performance, coach for improvement, and participate in various personnel procedures such as hiring, training, goal setting, discipline, dismissal, and other related actions.
+ Prepare, monitor, and manage the technology budget, including negotiating vendor agreements.
+ Under the direction of the senior vice president for finance and facilities, prepare and execute annual plans, including prioritization and justification.
+ Manage the evolution of enterprise systems to adapt to the changing needs of the museum and leverage these technologies for business intelligence and flawless operations for ticketing, admissions, and group scheduling.
+ Manage the implementation and transition to new enterprise systems while ensuring data integrity as information is passed between systems.
+ Consistent with the strategic plan, foster and implement plans to grow the museum’s technology infrastructure and integrate appropriate technologies throughout the organization.
+ Manage all aspects of network administration, including VLAN, VPN, firewall, bandwidth and wireless management, shared print server, ISP monitoring, and UPS maintenance and monitoring.
+ Design, monitor, and manage private and public WLAN of devices in order to maximize access, performance, security, and stability.
+ Develop and maintain relationships with technology vendors and service providers, and oversee product evaluations, contracts, effectiveness, and delivery of services, as well as invoice management.
+ Manage equipment inventories, software subscription services, and support agreements, and ensure they meet museum requirements.
+ Develop and oversee all policies and procedures, including information security, change control, auditing, backups and compliance.
+ Implement programs to meet best practices for data governance requirements, including those related to the PCI DSS.
+ Direct development and strategy for open-source applications running on LAMP.
+ Assist in supporting exhibit and digital signage components and other interactive experiences throughout the galleries.
+ Participate in the technical support of electronic gaming devices within the collections, including technologies for capturing game play.
+ In collaboration with the collections and library teams, research and develop best practices for digitizing print materials. Store and preserve images, audio, video, and other electronic media, and make those and other digital assets available to online audiences and others.
+ Nurture an organizational culture of collegiality and service within the IT team. Establish standards for interaction with museum staff, volunteers, guests, and the general public. Set direction and goals for meeting the needs of museum staff and guests.
+ Lead the ongoing assessment of technology resources. Collaborate with IT team members to review current technology platforms, assessing new technology options against the museum’s goals and objectives, and developing and implementing a technology plan that ensures the systems and technology are well-integrated throughout all programs and operations.
+ Review and approve all systems and programs prior to their implementation.
+ Develop and test disaster recovery and business continuity plans to mitigate and manage IT-associated risk.
+ Work extensively with all members of the IT team to plan, report on, and control project tasks to ensure timely delivery of quality deliverables.
+ Implement in-house training programs to support staff use of all institutional information technologies.
+ Provide functional assistance to end users via Helpdesk services. Work with end users to determine best approach to address identified issues.
+ Respond to unplanned outages, gauge problem severity, and communicate with affected users to develop resolutions/workarounds.
+ Interact with users to promote information sharing, provide timely answers, and ensure informational integrity and reliability. Provide expertise on data and knowledge management to ensure that staff has information they need to effectively perform their jobs.
+ Maintain an awareness of emerging technologies and service trends and their applications to the museum environment.
+ Participate in the development and achievement of annual technology and museum-wide goals and objectives.
+ Identify and act on opportunities to help and support the work efforts of team members. Assist the IT team and other museum teams with various projects, as requested.
+ Attend technology team and general staff meetings, and others, as needed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The candidate may have any combination of education and experience, but should possess the required skills and knowledge for successful performance. Our general minimum requirements are:
+ Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field from an accredited college or university.
+ 8-10 years’ experience including a proven track record of success as a team leader on IT development projects.
+ 5+ years’ experience in desktop support and troubleshooting.
+ Strong ability to be proactive and excellent follow up skills.
+ Demonstrated ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work.
+ Ability to communicate with all museum teams and to create a high-functioning, innovative and collaborative staff work environment.
+ Possession of or ability to obtain a lift certification.
