Job Title: Advocacy Support Specialist
The Arc Erie County NY is seeking a talented, dedicated and results-driven Advocacy Support Specialist. This position is part of a supported employment program designed for individuals with a documented developmental disability.
Responsibilities and Duties
+ Advocates for the rights of people with developmental disabilities
+ Participates in advocacy groups relating to people with developmental disabilities including, but not limited to self-advocacy groups at The Arc Erie County
+ Assists with developing trainings designed for people supported by the agency
+ Attends and conducts scheduled trainings for people supported by the agency
Qualifications and Skills
+ Experience speaking up for oneself and others preferred
+ Some knowledge of issues affecting people with developmental and other disabilities
+ Demonstrates the ability to conduct trainings
+ Good communication skills
+ Must have reliable transportation

Position Summary:
This position performs duties in support of self-advocates served by the Agency including training and peer support.
Reporting Relationship:
Reports to and receives supported by the Self-Advocacy Specialist.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
+ Advocates for the rights of people with developmental disabilities
+ Participates in advocacy groups relating to people with developmental disabilities including, but not limited to self-advocacy groups at The Arc Erie County
+ Conducts trainings for people supported by the agency supported by the Self-Advocacy Specialist
+ Assists with developing trainings designed for people supported by the agency
+ Attends and conducts scheduled trainings for people supported by the agency
+ Keeps all sensitive information confidential according to HIPPA regulations
+ Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
+ Experience speaking up for oneself and others preferred
+ Some knowledge of issues affecting people with developmental and other disabilities
+ Demonstrates the ability to conduct trainings
+ Good communication skills
+ Good organizational skills
+ Professional Demeanor

+ Mental Requirements:
Has the ability to read and to respond to/answer questions. Is able to be approachable, personable, and enthusiastic when communicating with people supported and others
+ Human Relations Skills:
The ability to communicate with people in a positive manner, the ability to be a leader as a well as a role model to people supported by the agency. The ability to communicate with people that have different or alternative modes of communication
+ Equipment Operation:
Ability to utilize email, phone, and personal calendar (electronic or otherwise)

These include practices that treat people with dignity and respect at all times, ensure safety, best possible health/well-being and provide the person with continuity and personal security through the use of natural supports, positive relationships and opportunities for integration in the community. Staff members should also advocate and work toward assisting the people we support through person-centered planning to achieve the personal outcome goals that they have chosen by facilitating the plans and positive supports necessary to assist the person in progressing toward each outcome.

This position is NON-EXEMPT from the overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standard Act.
