The Managing Director, Unit Development (MDOD) is a leader within the Office of Advancement and senior member of the unit development team, charged with providing strategic management of the comprehensive fundraising strategy for two high performing development teams within OA; the Walsh School of Foreign Service and the Office of Family Philanthropy teams. This position is also a senior fundraiser, expected to routinely ask for and raise major, planned, and principal gifts. In the midst of the University’s most ambitious campaign yet, Called to Be (https://calledtobe.georgetown.edu/) , it has never been a more exciting time to join Georgetown’s high-performing, best-in-class development office, which is poised to raise over $3B during the course of this campaign in support of the University’s strategic initiatives. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Unit Development, the MDOD will be charged with ensuring the comprehensive build out of a strategy and execution plan for the SFS as it relates to their philanthropic activities, guiding and building a highly engaging parent and family giving program for the university, managing multiple fundraisers and support staff positions, and, most notably, overseeing a personal portfolio of current and prospective donors while meeting annual fundraising metrics. The MDoD will be expected to raise $7M+ annually and conduct approximately 100 visits. The MDoD will also have an appropriate task goal, focused on soliciting six-figure and larger gifts. While the position’s primary responsibility is to raise funds for the SFS, the role will also be expected to, at times, be a University generalist and be able to engage and represent all needs across campus, as many donors have multiple philanthropic interests at Georgetown. As with all unit or school-based fundraising roles, this position will sometimes require behind-the-scenes coordination among academic leadership, fellow development officers, and volunteers. This will certainly be the case with parent donors and prospects with whom this position works closely. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
As the lead fundraiser working closely with the SFS Dean, work to design, implement, oversee, manage, and evaluate integrated annual and campaign-related giving strategies centered around the SFS and the school’s fundraising success in raising $300M within the Called to Be Campaign; This includes the identification and articulation of SFS priorities, the creation and communication of a case for support, the facilitation of potential donors through the donor lifecycle, and the appropriate accounting and stewardship of gifts received.
Act as a liaison not only with the SFS Dean and the Dean’s office, but also a number of other faculty partners within the school, with the various SFS centers, initiatives, and programs.
Oversee a team of two fundraisers and a development associate dedicated to the SFS, and ensure alignment, awareness, and education of SFS priorities across all regional and unit development colleagues.
Have broader management of a comprehensive strategy for Georgetown’s principal, major, planned, and leadership gift prospects through the work of our Family Philanthropy Team, which is engaged with Georgetown parents, ensuring strong coordination of all advancement staff and university-wide collaborative partners related to these fundraising efforts.
Serve as the strategic leader for all advancement management and activity related to parent prospects and donors, focused on developing a strong base of philanthropic support from Georgetown families across key markets.
Ensure representation of Georgetown’s current campaign and priorities, and balanced support and synergies with this constituent group across all undergraduate schools.
Oversee the relationship between OA and the Vice President of Student Affairs, coordinating and executing Student Affairs initiatives in the current and future campaigns; Team oversight will include direct management of a Director of Development; the DoD will then handle the day-to-day coordination of this office and its activities, along with the management of an Associate Director of Development and a Development Associate.
In addition to the management of strategy and program building, serve as a senior fundraiser for the institution, building and engaging a portfolio, mainly made up of SFS-interested alumni, parents, friends, foundations and corporations, and seven-figure plus parent prospects.
Serve as a convener, contact, and educator to colleagues across OA and the development teams, ensuring appropriate SFS and Parent Giving coordination.
