    Head Library Clerk

     

    Chicago Public Library

     

    (Library Operations and Patron Experience)

     

    Number of Positions: 8

     

    (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

     

    Starting Salary: $50,424

     

    This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City’s collective bargaining agreement with** **AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) – BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5.** **Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    Under general supervision, supervises staff engaged in the performance of clerical library duties to provide service to library patrons and to support the functions of the Chicago Public Library, and performs related duties as required.

     

    • Provide public service to library patrons.

    • Charge and discharge library materials, collect fees, register and maintain database records.

    • Assist patrons with general inquiries and material searches.

    • Process applications for library cards by reviewing required documents and entering patron data into an integrated library system.

    • Assist with processing of library materials.

    • Sort and distribute mail and perform opening and closing desk procedures. Perform data entry, word processing, filing and shelving of materials. Assist with Holds, interlibrary loan, statistical, and cash reports and maintenance of the newspaper and magazine collection.

    • May assist with library outreach.

    • Works as part of a team to meet city and library goals.

    • Participate in professional development.

    • Interprets the Library's policies and procedures to the public in a customer friendly manner.

    • Upholds the Library's commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

    • Performs related duties as assigned. This job is ideal for a genial, detail-oriented individual who enjoys interacting with people.

    _Additional duties may be required for this position_

    **LOCATION:** Various – District 1 through District 5, and Harold Washington Library Center

    **DAYS OFF:** Two days off per week

    **SHIFT** : Will be required to work some evenings and weekends

    **HOURS:** 37.50 hours per week to be scheduled during normal unit hours

    THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS

    High school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED) plus two years of clerical library work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

    This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral part of the interview will be selected.

    Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

    • Candidate with previous library experience, including volunteer.

    • Candidate pursuing a library science degree.

    • Bookstore, retail/ customer service experience

    • Bilingual
