    Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

     

    The Lead Pharmacist (LP) assists with oversight and logistics surrounding departmental compliance with regulations and medication management standards. The Lead Pharmacist will perform various activities to ensure safe and effective drug therapy. The Lead Pharmacist will spend a specified component of their time leading a specialized pharmacy activity or working on pharmacy related business activities within the department. Activities may include, but are not limited to coordinating departmental practice, organizing training and in-services, managing quality assurance and performance improvement activities.

    Essential Job Functions

    + In addition to pharmacist responsibilities, duties focus on program development, policy development and implementation, quality assurance and performance improvement activities and resource management. The Lead Pharmacist functions in a variety of roles to improve pharmacy operations, support regulatory compliance and fiscal stewardship.

    + Develops standard-related practice expertise of pharmacy staff. Advances standards, requirements and training programs for pharmacy practice and coordinates competency for compliance.

    + Promotes safe medication utilization, identifies and resolves potential and actual adverse medication events and may evaluate reports in hospital’s event reporting system for trending and prevention purposes.

    + Works collaboratively and effectively communicates verbally and in writing with pharmacy team members, caregivers and leaders to deliver high quality pharmaceutical services.

    + Assists with standard leadership functions within the department to include oversight of staff, input for employee assessments and evaluations, attends committees and meetings, assists with call-out coverage, on-call rotation and initiation of emergency procedures and other duties as assigned.

    + Lead IV Pharmacist duties- coordinates the provision of inpatient and outpatient intravenous admixture services, works to ensure safe and effective drug therapy by coordinating departmental and staff practice, oversees all admixture quality assurance and performance improvement activities and participates in service related committees. The Lead IV Pharmacist may also assist in maintaining infusion pump drug libraries, supports related information systems and may participate in investigational or research related activities.

    + Lead Research Pharmacist duties (if applicable) oversees investigational pharmacy operations and pharmacy technical staff to support clinical research activities related to industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated trials for multiple research sites in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The Lead Research Pharmacist develops, monitors and maintains step-by-step procedures for accountability, storage, preparation, dispensing and distribution of investigational and study drugs and maintains codes, labels and other predefined formats for pharmacy computer entry. The Lead Research Pharmacist evaluates study protocols to determine appropriate resources and materials needed to satisfy study requirements and interacts with investigators, study sponsors, research personnel and other healthcare providers.

    Licensing/Certification

     

    Pharmacist Licensure – State Board of Pharmacy (required)

     

    Valid state driver's license (preferred)

    Education

    Bachelor's of Science in Pharmacy from an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy (required)

     

    Advanced pharmacy degree, residency or degree in healthcare leadership (preferred)

    Work Experience

    3 years of experience working as a pharmacist in a pharmacy (required)

     

    Previous supervisory experience (preferred)
