DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities. A cover letter and resume must be submitted as part of the application process and attached “as relevant” to the requisition. *Job Opening:*The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries seeks applicants for a Seasonal Shellfish Program Lab/Field Technician to perform the following duties: DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assists in performing laboratory analyses of shellfish samples, water samples, phytoplankton, and related quality controls using Standard Methods and approved SOPs found in the laboratory QA manual. 2. Prepares laboratory materials such as culture media, buffers, bacteriological cultures and chemical reagents. 3. Maintains laboratory equipment and performs periodic equipment calibrations and adjustments. 4. Performs routine tasks associated with a microbiology laboratory such as washing dishes and glassware, operating an autoclave and general laboratory upkeep. 5. Occasional field work for the classification component of the Shellfish Sanitation and Management Program including water sampling and shellfish sample collections. 6. Operate and maintain field equipment including sampling equipment and motor vehicles. 7. Process data including data entry for computer analysis. 8. Assist other MADMF projects with conducting research and field sampling as needed and when time permits. 9. Demonstrate professionalism in words and actions and perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledges, skills, abilities): 1. Knowledge of bacteriological testing procedures, sterile technique, and QA/QC practices. 2. A basic understanding of the operation of laboratory equipment (autoclaves, pH meters, pipettes). 3. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. 4. Ability to follow guidelines, protocols, and procedures. 5. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule to accommodate laboratory and sampling needs including occasional weekends and evenings. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Experience following SOPs, particularly sterile technique in a microbiological laboratory 2. Experience counting and identifying phytoplankton 3. Experience collecting data in the field. 4. Familiarity with sampling gear commonly employed in the field of fisheries science and associated disciplines. 5. Ability to prioritize, follow-through and complete tasks. 6. Working knowledge of computer word processing and spreadsheet software including MSWORD and EXCEL. *This is a seasonal contract position.
