Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings to supportive housing.

    The team member we are searching for:

    Drives an ambulance to transport patients to and from County and non-County hospitals and institutions on emergency and non-emergency calls.

     

    Essential Job Functions

     

    Drives an ambulance in compliance with State and local traffic laws and ordinances and County policies and procedures to transport ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients, wheelchair patients and stretcher patients who may be either acute or non-acute to and from their homes County or non-County health care facilities or predetermined locations.

     

    Responsible for the safe transportation of the patients and ambulance crew.

     

    Determines the ambulance speed and emergency driving conditions for transporting acute stretcher patients.

     

    Lifts and transfers patients between beds and stretchers or height-adjustable ambulance cots equipped with wheels.

     

    Carries patients in stretchers and wheels patients in stretchers or wheelchairs.

     

    Lifts patients into and out of an ambulance and positions them securely in the ambulance.

     

    Notifies Ambulance Dispatcher by telephone or radio of traffic accident involving ambulance or any other emergency requiring a change in the route or trip plan such as need for transporting a patient directly to a County hospital or the nearest emergency hospital.

     

    Reports any traffic accidents in accordance with California State Motor Vehicle Code and completes required accident reports.

     

    Stops ambulance and assists Ambulance Medical Technician in restraining patients who become irrational or violent.

     

    While in route, stops at scene of accident or other emergency and provides emergency care, if necessary.

     

    Completes Driver's Daily Trip Report including entries of information about ambulance servicing and patients transported. This includes patient's name and address, departure and return times, mileage, and any unusual circumstances or services performed such as the use of siren or oxygen.

     

    Reports any accompanying medial or non-medical personnel.

     

    Monitor and Operate radio and County issued cellular equipment to maintain constant communication capability.

     

    Review and respond to work-generated emails using County-issued equipment while on shift.

     

    Inspects ambulance and reports necessary repairs; checks and adds gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, and other fluids (e.g., transmission fluid, coolant, wiper fluid).

     

    Attend and participate in simulated emergency response drills.

     

    Transport patient belongings and durable medical equipment.

     

    Performs duties of Ambulance Medical Technician to support patient transportation needs, as needed.

    Requirements

    Requirements to qualify:

    License:

    A valid California Class C Driver License* is required.

    Required Certificates:

    + A validCalifornia Ambulance Driver Certificate*.

    + A valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate* .

    + A validCalifornia Emergency Medical TechnicianCertificate*.

    + A validCPR for Healthcare Providerscertificate*.

    A valid California Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Certificate or a valid California Paramedic License may be submitted in lieu of the California Emergency Medical Technician Certificate.

     

    The required license/certificate(s) must be current and unrestricted; conditional, provisional, or restricted license/certificate(s) will NOT be accepted.

    PHYSICAL CLASS IV - Arduous:

    Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.

     

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:

    This examination will consist of an oral interview which will assess the applicants Knowledge and Skills, Interpersonal and Verbal Communication Skills, Adaptability , Problem Solving, and Dependability & Ethics , weighted 100%.

     

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be added to the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION:

    Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis, and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligibility register accordingly.

     

    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

     

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

     

    The list of successful candidates created from this exam will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.

    AVAILABLE SHIFT:

    Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
