    Description

    The Department of Slover is currently seeking a part-time Maintenance Worker for its Operations division responsible for facility maintenance and repair, venue and space configuration, facility emergency response, facility inspection and reporting, and other related duties. Duties include liaising with custodial staff, maintaining the overall appearance and cleanliness of the two-building facility, and assisting in facility maintenance emergencies.

     

    Slover Operations provides oversight over all internal operational matters including budget, revenue, expenditures, procurement activities; Nurturing a safe and accessible facility by implementing innovative processes that maintain and enhance the Slover and Seaboard buildings which is home to the Downtown Branch Library, the Sergeant Memorial Collection, revenue generating rental spaces including the cafe, and the Roy E. Hendrix Business Development Center; practicing sustainable facility resource management; coordinating contractual services for custodial and security; and facilitating IT and special project coordination. Our goal is to empower each internal department at The Slover to be a vibrant hub of knowledge, culture and community with sound financial oversight providing the highest quality facilities, and offering community enriching technology while fostering a safe, diverse, and inclusive environment for all to enjoy.

     

    The Slover is a beautiful venue and multi-use facility in downtown Norfolk with a mission to be a premier destination for residents and visitors to enjoy. The Slover will support a thriving downtown by encouraging tourism, providing resources for entrepreneurs, and housing the downtown branch library at The Slover. The Slover generates revenue through event rentals, visitor activities, and cafe Commissions.

    Essential Functions

    Facility Maintenance & Repair:

    + Liaise and coordinate with contracted custodial staff and occasionally complete the following tasks:

    *Occasionally sweep and mop elevators and stairwells

    *Empty garbage cans, collected debris on external exit and entrances

    *Polish Chrome on stairwells, wash windows, and address walls

    *Refill, replace parts, and maintain soap and sanitizer dispensers

    *Address baseboards, vents, doors, vacuum, spot removal and perform in house carpet treatments

    *Light bulb replacement, interior paint touchups, pressure washing and washing exterior windows, patios,

     

    designated other surfaces

    Venue Rental Room Configuration includes:

    + Support The Department of Slover Services by delivering, assembling, and dismantling chairs and tables for Slover event room configuration

    Emergency Facility Response Assistance includes:

    + Assist The Slover Facility Manager in responding to emergencies caused by inclement weather events – This includes: removing ice, snow, and storm debris

    + Conducting water damage mitigation – This involves addressing and minimizing the impact of water leaks, floods, and other water-related incident to prevent further damage for City capital

    Facility Inspection & Reporting:

    + Maintain Slover Facility Maintenance shop cleanliness and maintain equipment and tools

    + Assist in conducting building inspections

    + Assist in reporting inspection findings, update and maintain records and work orders

    + Assist in performing fixed asset inventory

    + Provide administrative support by ensuring safety, reading maps, and building plans

    + Process work orders with city of Norfolk General Services system and internal work order software

    + Pack and unpack equipment

    + General moving and hauling of equipment and furniture

    Education/Experience

    Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.

    Preferred Experience:

    •Previous experience in janitorial or facility maintenance roles, especially within local or state government sector

    •Familiarity with safety protocols and janitorial best practices

    •Ability to work independently and address facility related challenges

    •Ability to compose inspection reports and articulate findings to management

    Work Hours: Alternative work schedule – to include nights and weekends – 20 hours per week – Schedule needs to be flexible as hours may vary for special events and operational needs.

     

    + Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

    + Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

    + Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

    + Retirement

     

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
