    Summary:

    As a Senior Mortgage Loan Underwriter, you are responsible for evaluating and making decisions on mortgage loan applications in accordance with bank policies, investor guidelines, and government regulations. Your expertise and leadership help ensure quality underwriting decisions, strong customer service, and the positive promotion of the bank’s reputation and strategic goals.

    Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

    + File Evaluation: Perform preliminary evaluation of loan applications, including analysis of credit reports, income documentation, and asset statements to determine loan eligibility.

    + Scenario Desk Support: Provide scenario-based guidance to loan originators and processors regarding loan structuring, program eligibility, and investor guideline interpretation.

    + Post-Closing Reconciliation: Assist with investor post-closing audits by resolving underwriting conditions and documentation discrepancies to facilitate timely loan sale and purchase.

    + Communication & Coordination: Collaborate with processors, loan officers, and closing/post-closing teams to ensure a smooth workflow, timely responses, and complete, accurate documentation.

    + Operations Support: Provide general support to mortgage operations, including assistance with quality control audits, compliance reviews, and pipeline management activities.

    + Documentation & Compliance: Maintain thorough and accurate records of underwriting decisions and ensure all documentation meets internal policies, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements.

    + Underwriting Department Support: Contribute to the development of junior underwriters by mentoring and assisting with their review and analysis of mortgage loan files for compliance with investor and company standards.

    + Ongoing Learning: Remain current on changes to investor guidelines, regulatory updates, and industry best practices to ensure continued compliance and operational excellence.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    + High school diploma or GED required.

    + Strong computer skills.

    + Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

    + Strong skills in working efficiently under time limitations.

    + Advanced math and calculation skills.

    + 5+ years previous experience in mortgage loan underwriting preferred. DE and LAPP designation required.

    + Speech Clarity – The ability to speak clearly so others can understand you both in person and over the phone.

    + Near Vision – The ability to review customer information on the computer, on documents as well as, visually identify customer identity.

    + Speech Recognition – The ability to identify and understand the speech of another person.

    + Mathematical Reasoning – The ability to choose the right mathematical methods or formulas to solve a problem.

    + Reading Comprehension – Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.

    + Physical Requirements – Lifting – The ability to lift a minimum of 10 lbs. up to a height of 3-4 ft. Standing/sitting - Must have the ability to remain in stationary positions 75% of the workday. Dexterity – The ability to operate a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, adding machine, copy machine and printer. Hearing – the ability to exchange accurate information to customers in regard to their accounts and/or banking procedures.

    + Active Learning – Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making. The ability to learn technical material.
