Patient Care Technician – Specialist Responsibilities
Cultural & Professional Awareness
+ Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in healthcare.
+ Promote safety for both patients and self within the workplace.
•️ Clinical Support & Patient Care
+ Perform routine patient care tasks: ADLs (bathing, toileting, ambulation, feeding, repositioning, etc.), vital signs, I&O, weights.
+ Conduct point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose), specimen collection, bladder scanning.
+ Apply/reapply telemetry monitors, TEDs/SCDs for HAC/PSI prevention, and simple dressings.
+ Manage restraints per protocol; insert/remove Foley catheters, straight catheters, and IVs; complete phlebotomy and "ticket to ride."
Advanced Clinical Skills (per department need)
+ Competent in at least one: basic arrhythmia recognition, complex wound care, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube clamping/removal.
Unit Support & Operations
+ Answer call lights and phones, pass meal trays, and transport patients (including cardiac monitored).
+ Report equipment malfunctions and complete department clerical duties.
+ May be in medication storage areas and transport medications between departments when accompanying patients.
•⚕️ Instruction & Documentation
+ Provide basic instruction to patients/families under RN supervision.
+ Accurately document care according to protocols.
Teamwork & Development
+ Communicate learning needs; seek help with prioritization.
+ Contribute to quality initiatives and departmental projects.
+ Take ownership of assignments and problem-solving to support team efficiency.
+ High school diploma or GED
+ One of the following:
+ 2 years of general healthcare experience _and_ meets Patient Care Technician – Senior title criteria
+ 1 year of general healthcare experience _and_ enrolled in PT/OT/PA program with at least one clinical rotation completed
+ 1 year of general healthcare experience _and_ completed bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field
• Required Training and Competencies
+ Completion of Patient Care Technician Specialist class
+ Completion of eRecord training
+ Completion of basic arrhythmia course and annual competency
+ Annual professional contribution (defined after hire)
Preferred Qualifications
+ Nursing student who has completed one clinical rotation
+ Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program
+ ACLS certification
Licensure & Certifications
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification based on AHA standards within 30 days of hire
+ Act 34 clearance
