The School of Law has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of Human Resources to join their team.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, the School of Law Director of Human Resources provides director level administrative oversight and human resources support to the School of Law, its centers and graduate programs, and the Gallagher Law Library. The Director is responsible for the diverse recruitment and retention of faculty staff and students.
The Director provides leadership and expertise in academic and general human resources policies and procedures, employment practices, payroll, and employee relations. The Director provides decision support to the Dean, Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, and faculty and staff leadership on recruitment, hiring, compensation, general human resources functions, regulatory compliance (including FLSA, FMLA, EEO, and ADA), training and development, corrective actions and separations. This position manages complex personnel issues for the School’s full-time faculty, approximately 200 part-time faculty, librarians, and staff (professional staff and contract-classified employees in three different bargaining units). To effectively integrate equity and engagement into all aspects of the faculty, student, and staff experience, the Director will incorporate UW Law’s core diversity values into all talent and development initiatives.
The Director supervises 1.0 FTE. The HR Assistant Director who serves as HR generalist.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:** **Human Resources, Employee Relations, and Personnel (65% FTE)
+ Provide advice and counsel on faculty, librarian, and staff HR issues. Interpret all aspects of academic and staff personnel policies and procedures (e.g. Faculty Code, University of Washington rules and regulations, Washington Administrative Code, FMLA/family medical leave use, grievances, performance problems, corrective disciplinary action, layoff procedures, etc.) for law school leadership, faculty and staff.
+ Respond to inquiries regarding HR issues such as complex leave issues, outside professional work, telecommute policy, compensation, job classification and employee relations.
+ Manage the hiring, appointment, and separation actions for faculty, staff and student appointments. Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, UW policies and procedures, and union contract regulations for faculty, staff and academic student employees.
+ Serve as a resource for faculty, students, and staff who have safety or harassment complaints. Manage and conduct investigations around allegations of violations of policies, practices, and code of conduct and complex employee relations issues.
+ Review, monitor and advise on internal equity of staff, librarian, and faculty positions. Review, provide advice and counsel, and coordinate appointment changes, compensation changes, and position reviews for professional and classified staff.
+ Manage the annual faculty merit process and performance evaluation process for professional and classified staff with Sr. Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs and Associate Dean for Finance and Administration
+ Manage all faculty and academic personnel appointment actions, including hiring, promotion and tenure, reappointment, appointment renewal, endowed chairs and professorships, sabbatical processes.
+ Oversee the recruitment and search process for classified and professional staff. Participate in candidate interviews, provide coaching to hiring managers and ensure hiring strategies support open and inclusive searches.
+ Write and review position descriptions for new and replacement positions and position reviews, assuring responsibilities and requirements are appropriate for salary offered and equitable with compensation levels for similar positions in the law school. Analyze job requirements, determine essential functions and identify criteria to fill specific vacancies.
+ Oversee and initiate staff disciplinary actions, layoffs, and reassignments.
+ Manage disability accommodation process and ensure compliance with Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) policies. **Equity and Community Engagement (10% FTE)**
+ Collaboratively manage the design of UW Law’s equity, diversity and workforce equity, retention and community activities to support the School of Law workforce. Conduct workforce analysis, climate surveys, and organizational assessments to identify enablers and potential inhibitors to an inclusive environment.
+ Nurture campus, community, and other partnerships that help UW Law strengthen its impact and visibility on issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, belonging and multiculturalism.
+ Manage funding allocated for consulting, training and coaching for leaders and employees various professional development as well as diversity and equity training. **Communication and Process Improvement (10% FTE)**
+ Oversee the UW Law’s HR intranet and process documentation. Develop databases and other tracking tools and utilize data resources available through central units to track human resource information including organizational charts, directories, faculty promotion and tenure, paid professional leave, committee memberships, mandatory deadline reviews, salary comparisons, staff reports and other information as necessary. **Training and Development (10%)**
+ Partner with Associate Dean of Finance and Administration and other staff leadership to develop trainings and workshops on a variety of topics including supervisor effectiveness and employee retention and satisfaction. **Other Duties as Assigned (5%)** **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Organizational Development, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
+ Six years of increasingly responsible human resources experience including personnel administration and analysis, including four years of experience managing and leading employees.Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Experience working in the area of diversity and inclusion, community outreach, or a relevant, related discipline.
+ Knowledge of applicable federal and state personnel policies, rules, regulations and laws.
+ Must demonstrate strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.
+ Diplomatic and articulate communication style. Excellent oral and written skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with all levels of University employees.
+ Ability to work with diverse people with tact, sensitivity, and confidentiality.
+ Possesses a high level of accountability, drives for results, displays a sense of ownership, and is passionate about attaining goals and surpassing expectations. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Master’s degree in Organizational Development, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
+ University of Washington human resources experience to include knowledge of University personnel policy and procedures for faculty, professional, classified staff, and graduate students. Familiarity with UW, State, and Federal HR policies and laws.
