    Course Description

    Between the upheavals of the French Revolution and the First World War, the European nations witnessed an utter transformation of their world. The relations of human beings to the nation, to the state, to history, and to the physical world were rethought from top to bottom. Our exploration of modern ideas take us from rationalism to racism, and from utopian ideologies to the birth of psychoanalysis.

    Responsibilities*

    GSI duties will include, but are not limited to:

    + Reading paper drafts and provide close guidance for students in rewrite process.

    + Grading three short essays, some quizzes, and one final paper from each student.

    + Holding regular office hours, at least two hours per week, to assist students throughout the course.

    + Being available over email to help students in case they have any questions pertaining to the course.

    + Meeting regularly with the course instructor.

    + Attendance at some lectures and assist minimally with lectures.

    Required Qualifications*

    Applicants must be currently enrolled as a graduate student in good standing at the University of Michigan.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + relevant academic preparation for teaching the course material

    + no knowledge of German or philosophy required, but some familiarity with 19th-century thought will be helpful

    + (preferably) prior GSI experience/with favorable student evaluations

    + overall academic performance and progress toward the degree

    + ability to work with diverse student body and with very diverse assignments

    + compatible availability.

     

    Modes of Work

     

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.     Decision Making Process

     

    All applications will be submitted for review to the faculty member teaching the course. Possible interviews will take place on a rolling basis and decisions will be made by mid-July. After review of applications and possible interviews, decisions will be made by the faculty member teaching the course.

     

    *All GSI appointments are subject to administrative approval. The department reserves the right to cancel the appointment due to low enrollment figures.
