    The Patient Assistance Specialist plays a vital role in supporting individuals and families as they navigate health coverage options including Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Qualified Health Plans (QHPs) through Idaho's Health Insurance Exchange. In addition to enrollment assistance, this role provides comprehensive, compassionate support in connecting patients with essential services and resources that impact their overall well-being — including access to food, housing, transportation, behavioral health care, and other community-based support systems.

     

    Functioning as both a health insurance navigator and a trusted resource connector, the Patient Assistance Specialist works one-on-one with patients to reduce barriers to care, foster stability, and improve long-term health outcomes. This position also serves as a key resource for clinic staff, helping address patient needs related to self-pay billing, enrollment questions, and resource access.

     

    A typical day of a Patient Assistance Specialist might include.

    + Provide culturally competent and comprehensive information on Medicaid, CHIP, and QHP coverage options.

    + Assist individuals with application submissions, eligibility screening, documentation gathering, and troubleshooting enrollment barriers.

    + Maintain strict confidentiality and ensure compliance with HIPAA and enrollment privacy standards.

    + Track eligibility assistance and enrollment outcomes; maintain accurate documentation and encounter records.

    + Actively connect patients to local, regional, and national resources that address social determinants of health, including:

    + Food assistance programs

    + Housing and utility support

    + Transportation services

    + Behavioral health and substance use of treatment resources

    + Employment and education services

    + Legal aid and crisis support

    + Collaborate closely with medical, dental, behavioral health, and care coordination teams to ensure wraparound support for patients.

    + Maintain updated knowledge of community services and build working relationships with resource providers.

    + Serve as a point of contact for patients during off-site and on-site outreach efforts, offering continued support beyond initial enrollment.

    + Participate in outreach events, health fairs, and community meetings to expand awareness of KCH services and community resources.

    + Assist in the planning and execution of outreach strategies in partnership with the Director of Marketing & Community Relations.

    + Build and sustain partnerships with organizations such as Head Start, school districts, churches, tribal health, and local public health departments.

    + Complete required federal and state consumer assistance trainings and maintain current certification.

    + Support the Patient Assistance Manager and provide coverage as needed.

    + Engage in ongoing professional development, including training, webinars, and learning sessions.

    Experience Needed to Land this Gig:

    + Health or social service sector serving low-income and underserved populations experience preferred.

    + Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

    + Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.

    + Proficient computer skills, including office suite. Ability to learn new software and technology quickly.

    + Knowledge of program and community resources within Boundary & Bonner County Communities preferred

    + Must be able to exercise discretion in all matters related to the enrollment process as well as confidential company information

    + The ability to work in the absence of direct supervision, stay on task and see job at hand through to completion.

    + Excellent time management and critical thinking skills

    + Consistent tact and graciousness in dealing with members of the public as well as continuous professionalism with patients and co-workers

    + Must be able to work under conditions of constant interruption.

    + Ability to maintain strict corporate confidentiality and HIPAA compliance
