    Department Introduction:

    The Director of Safety, Resilience, Emergency and Response will oversee the LBRE Safety Office and the Resilience and Emergency Response efforts for the entire university. The Resilience and Emergency Response program ensures that the greater Stanford community is notified of critical incidents and aware of the steps we are taking to respond. This occurs in an expeditious fashion 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

     

    To ensure success, we partner with Environmental, Health & Safety, University Communications, University Information Technology, Department of Public Safety, Residential & Dining Enterprises, Department of Athletics, Physical Education & Recreation, Stanford Campus Residential Leaseholders, Office of Special Events & Protocol, and other departments to provide a robust response to critical incidents. We also work with the schools and other departments across Stanford to better understand their needs and enhance resilience before, during and after an incident.

     

    The LBRE Safety Office is a team of dedicated professionals who assist employees with reducing health and safety risks associated with their work. We coach and train employees to integrate practical health and safety principles and compliance obligations into all aspects of our business.

    Job Purpose:

    LBRE is seeking a full-timeDirector of Safety, Resilience, Emergency and Response. This position is responsible for providing strategic leadership, oversight, and direction for comprehensive safety, resilience, and emergency management programs for LBRE. This includes developing, implementing, and maintaining programs, policies, and procedures designed to protect over 600 employees in LBRE, its assets, and its operations from hazards, emergencies, and disruptions, including wildfire mitigation and other resilience initiatives.

     

    This role requires a strategic, proactive, and collaborative leader who can build strong relationships across the University and with external agencies to foster a culture of safety and preparedness. This position will report to the Executive Director of Sustainability, Utilities and Infrastructure.

    Core Duties*:

    + Develop and implement a strategic plan for the Safety, Resilience, and Emergency Management group, aligning with the University’s plan and strategic goals.

    + Define the overall activities of environmental, health, and safety functions, and allocate appropriate staffing and other resources to achieve objectives including development and direction of related policy.

    + Alert senior management of legislative agendas and ramifications; develop appropriate strategies to address situations.

    + Provide leadership direction to management and professional personnel in the environmental, health, and safety functions and oversee subordinate managers with large program responsibility. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.

    + Maintain and control the financial budget related to units or departments.

    + Conduct business and technical briefings for senior and top management while serving as an Environmental Health and Safety authority for LBRE.

    + Represent LBRE as the designated senior safety officer when mandated by regulatory requirements.

    + Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies to address identified vulnerabilities and threats, including power outages, natural disasters, and significant operational disruptions.

    + Stay current on best practices, regulations, and emerging trends in safety, resilience, and emergency management.

    Education & Experience:

    + Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and seven years of related progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree and/or certification(s) may be required for some programs.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    + Ability to manage large environmental, health, and safety organizations, or a large professional service organization.

    + Ability to function as a senior manager, with responsibility for developing and mentoring managers and senior professionals.

    + Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

    + Ability to interpret and apply regulations.

    + Ability to conduct environmental, health, and safety related risk assessment, mitigation, and crisis management.

    + Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization.

    + Ability to lead professionally in emergency/crisis situations.

    Physical Requirements*:

    + Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks.

    + Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.

    + Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.

    Working Conditions:

    + Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.

    + May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals

    + May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.

    The expected pay range for this position is $202,121.00 to $230,000.00 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
