    The Technology & Innovation (T&I) Principal Engineer leads the development and implementation of new technology and innovation. This individual serves as the “go to” person and technical expert across for materials several aspects of technology. This individual manages and completes complex projects and teams and balances the different needs of operations, marketing and research. The Principal Engineer has direct customer contact, including visits to the customer, on-site project support, and any project that supports customer needs.

    You will have the opportunity to:

    + Comply with and support all EH&S activities while operating in a safe, honest and ethical manner

    + Independently drive and lead programs with multiple projects associated; cross-plant and high-capital projects

    + Manage product ownership from ideation to commercialization

    + Explore new research areas and present plans to management for investment; This includes both working internally to improve existing technology and looking outside the company for technology to implement internally

    + Coordinate and monitor NPPD activities within with their areas of expertise

    + Develop business opportunity statements and participate in the risk management activities related to the Innovation funnel. Conduct a risk and cost assessment for new ideas

    + Develop and maintain external technical links

    + Influence others throughout the organization in support of sound technical change and innovation

    + Lead and/or actively support Lean Sigma projects

    + Perform detailed cost analysis for new products and cost reduction opportunities for new processes

    + Operate independently of direct management while keeping management informed of progress and any important issues.

    + Provide mentorship and coaching for junior engineers and peers monitor focus and keep within established goals and objectives

    + Support new products and sales with customer visits

    + Be an active participant through customer interactions, conferences, and keeping abreast in latest science and market trends

    + Generate, identify, protect and document IP; support through patent filing process as applicable

    REQUIREMENTS:

    + Masters or Doctorate in Material Science, Engineering or Physical Sciences field; Bachelors in materials science field (e.g. Metallurgy, Ceramics or Materials Science) possible but must be specialized or have specific types of experiences related to specifical technical field

    + Minimum of 10 years of professional technical experience

    + Demonstrated ability to successfully lead on technical and/or design projects and teams

    + Excellent written and presentation skills

    + Up to 30% travel may be required based on business need

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Metallurgical science background with experience in casting and thermo-mechanical processing of a variety of alloy systems

    + Expertise in analytical methods for materials including SEM, metallography and chemical analysis

    + Experience leveraging Lean Six Sigma methodology, tools; Master Black Belt strongly preferred

    + Experience including data acquisition or design, materials/chemical processing technology

    + Proven product or process development skills

    + Industry recognition or active participation external professional organization; prior experience serving as the technical expert and teaching others

     

    The selection of the person to be hired for this position is contingent on the candidate having export compliance eligibility for access to U.S. controlled technology which comes under the licensing jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of State, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

     

    The candidate selected will have to qualify as either a U.S. citizen, a U.S. National, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., a Person Admitted into the U.S. as an Asylee or Refugee., a National of a country that is not prohibited from having access to U.S. controlled technology (via a letter of assurance), or a Person to be approved for an export license by the governing agency whose technology comes under its jurisdiction. Please understand that any job offer that requires approval of an export license will be conditional on Materion’s determination that it will be able to obtain an export license in a time frame consistent with Materion’s business requirements.
