Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY:
Shares in the ministry of caring for the spiritual, and emotional needs of the patients, their families, and the staff of the hospital. Provides religious counseling and supportive care and guidance. Assists patients to understand more fully life’s events as they relate to their spiritual and emotional well-being.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general direction and supervision of the VP of Catholic Mission and Identity and within established departmental policies and procedures, the incumbent performs the following functions:
1. Regularly visits with all patients, especially new admissions, while daily giving priority to referrals and those in greatest need. Provides sacramental ministry, religious counseling and crisis intervention as appropriate.
1. Ensures pastoral availability to families and staff in times of crisis.
1. Provides information about the availability of area clergy and makes contacts when requested.
1. Makes ethics consult referrals for patients, family and staff pursuant to the CMC Clinical Ethics Services policy. Participates in patient care conferences and discharge planning rounds.
1. Participates in departmental quality management activities. Maintains statistical reports of activities and submits to the Director, Office of Catholic Identity. Documents patient’s visitations and logs interactions for interdepartmental communication.
1. Attends departmental staff meetings and serves on hospital and community committees.
1. Performs similar or related duties as assigned or requested.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices to safely perform the essential functions of the job:
1. Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly. (Strength Factor: L-Light Work)
1. Ability to wear protective clothing such as masks, gloves, gowns, and glasses.
1. Ability to work with frequent interruptions and respond appropriately to unexpected situations.
1. Ability to maintain communications and establish working relationships with employees, physicians, patients and the public.
1. Ability to accept constructive feedback and initiate appropriate actions to correct situations.
1. Familiarity with quality improvement initiatives.
1. Ability to transport self to and from off-site locations.
What qualifications you will need:
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
+ Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Theology or in a related field.
+ Two or more credits of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred.
Experience:
+ Three years in hospital ministry preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
+ Certification by NACC, ACPE, or COC preferred.
