    Volunteer Coordinator

    Department: Volunteer Services

Reports to: Director of Human Resources

    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Part-Time

Your Mission: Empower the Volunteers Who Power Our Work

Do you believe that people working together can change the world for animals in need? As a Volunteer Coordinator at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, you’ll help inspire, organize, and support the volunteer force that is essential to our lifesaving mission. Whether you're guiding a new volunteer through onboarding or strengthening partnerships through our volunteer programs, you’ll be connecting passion to purpose every day.

This role is ideal for someone who is relationship-driven, highly organized, and excited to engage others in meaningful ways. You’ll work collaboratively across departments and within the Volunteer Services team to ensure volunteers feel informed, appreciated, and empowered to make a difference.

    What You’ll Do

You’ll be responsible for welcoming, training, scheduling, and supporting volunteers across a variety of roles and programs. You’ll process volunteer applications and collaborate with the Talent Acquisition Specialist and fellow Volunteer Coordinators to provide a smooth screening experience.

From maintaining volunteer records in our Volgistics database to helping craft our “Paws for Thought” volunteer newsletter, you’ll play a key role in keeping volunteers engaged and connected. You’ll answer volunteer inquiries, coordinate recognition and appreciation efforts, and work with departments to place volunteers where they’re most needed. You’ll also serve as a liaison between ARL and community partners involved in volunteer, humane education programming, and the Therapets volunteer program.

Above all, you’ll promote a culture of compassion, support, and teamwork—ensuring volunteers feel valued and aligned with the ARL's mission.

    What You Bring

You have at least two years of experience in volunteer coordination or customer service, with a passion for working with people in a fast-paced environment. A bachelor’s degree in business, communication, or a related field is preferred, as is previous experience coordinating volunteer programs and training.

You’re organized, detail-oriented, and skilled at managing multiple priorities. You bring strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, and you’re able to lead with empathy while holding clear expectations. You’re comfortable using Microsoft Office, and you bring a proactive mindset to time management and conflict resolution. A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record are required.

    Working Conditions

This role requires the ability to sit or stand for long periods and occasionally work outdoors in varying weather conditions. You may be exposed to pet dander, animal waste, loud environments, or minor injuries such as scratches. Lifting or moving up to 50 lbs may occasionally be required.

    Why Work at the ARL?

At the ARL, our volunteers are vital to every animal’s journey—and as a Volunteer Coordinator, you make that impact possible. You’ll be part of a team that believes in compassion, connection, and community, and you’ll help others find their place in the movement to protect and care for animals.

Employment in this position is at-will, meaning that either the employee or the ARL may terminate the employment relationship at any time.

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and/or applicable state regulations, the Animal Rescue League will provide reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities and encourages prospective employees and incumbents to discuss potential accommodations.

Schedule: Friday and Saturdays, required. Flexible additional days of the week. On-Site. Occasional evenings may be required for volunteer activities.
