    Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

     

    The RN Radiation Oncology provides nursing care and patient education for the patient during radiation therapy treatment course. The RN Radiation Oncology will assist with IV therapy for CT simulation.

    Essential Job Functions

    + _​_ Performs direct patient care and implements the Radiation Oncologist’s order(s). Assesses patients prior to being seen by the physician. Documents and evaluates all patient related information such as weight, vital signs, and medications.

    + Assesses patients for special needs and plans appropriate nursing interventions: a) Skin reactions; b) dietary needs; c) social service needs and d) psychological needs. Communicates with patients via phone regarding acute situations then notifies physician and provides appropriate follow up to the patient.

    + Assures comprehensive patient care based on appropriate assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and education of the patient.

    + Supports patient education and orientation. Distributes site specific educational material to patients and family. Provide patients with information on what to expect during radiation treatments and follow up care.

    + Assists with special procedures and monitors patient conditions. Provides IV therapy for contrast injection for CT simulation.

    + Schedules patient’s follow-up visits, off-site procedures and tests and notifies the business office. Prepares patient records for physician related visits prior to visit. Calls patients with test results under physicians’ direction.

    + Maintains exam room supplies and appearance.

    + Assists in the coordination of inpatient transfers and consultations. Obtains hospital records needed for consultation for day of visit.

    + Serves as a liaison with other disciplines: A) Social Services; B) Nutritional Services; C) Pain Management; D) Hospice; E) Palliative Care; and F) hospital nursing units/departments, etc.

    + Participates in performance improvement initiatives to continuously improve nursing care provided.

    Licensing/Certification

     

    Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice (required)

     

    OCN Oncology Certified Nurse (preferred)

     

    ONS Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy certified, or other chemotherapy certification (preferred)

     

    ONS Radiation Oncology Certification (preferred)

     

    CPR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (required)

    Education

    Graduate of an accredited school or college of nursing (required)

     

    BSN Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred); required within five years of hire if working within RSFH

    Work Experience

    2 years’ previous Oncology experience (preferred)

    Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.

     

    Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.​
