RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains high standards of operational excellence, including the safety and security of visitors, staff, and exhibits; proactive handling of incidents; and smooth day-to-day functioning of the museum—including staffing, scheduling and facilities management. Additionally, this position builds, leads and retains a high-performing, service-oriented team that are brand enthusiasts and deliver consistently outstanding guest interactions.
+ Strategic Planning & Reporting
+ Develop and manage the Museum’s annual budget and strategic plan. The strategic plan will include, but is not limited to, overview of strategy and mission alignment, environmental scan, department planning, budget development, communication and public relations overview, metrics, safety and security plans.
+ Establishes strategic marketing goals, objectives and key results for the SPAM® Museum. Develops a three-year business plan for the museum outlining public relations, marketing and community engagement plans.
+ Meets regularly with the museum gift shop manager, SPAM brand team and corporate communications to determine appropriate mix of retail offerings and serves as a liaison between the various organizations and their respective staffs.
+ Provides regular updates to direct supervisor on performance and management opportunities.
+ Security, Safety & Incident Management
+ Ensure the safety and security of guests, staff and exhibits at all times.
+ Handles disruptive visitors or unusual situations with professionalism and discretion, involving security or law enforcement when appropriate.
+ Maintain clear procedures for emergencies, incident response and guest behavior policies
+ Team Leadership
+ Recruit, train and manage a team of part-time staff (SPAM™bassadors)
+ Foster a culture of hospitality, enthusiasm and brand pride.
+ Set performance expectations, lead team meetings and provide ongoing coaching and development.
+ Creates and updates Museum policies, procedures and decision trees in accordance with Hormel Foods policies, standards and directives.
+ Responsible for overseeing the training and upskilling of staff for public tours of the museum, inclusive behavior and safety.
+ Creates and continuously updates a museum training manual that summarizes background information on the artifacts and other elements within the museum to provide tour guides with details and anecdotes that bring the museum experience to life.
+ Museum Operation & Guest Experience
+ Analyzes visitor data for planning and effectiveness of visitor experience. Uses this data for changes and improvements.
+ Ensures a consistent high-quality guest experience, from exhibit engagement to customer service. Audiences include, but are not limited to, print and broadcast media, digital and social media, tourism developers, general public and team members.
+ Stays up-to-date on best practices in Museum curation and design to create world-class displays and spaces.
+ Oversees the design, maintenance and periodic refresh of exhibits to keep content relevant and interactive. When necessary, the manager oversees the development and design of proposals and negotiates cost.
+ Works cross functionally with marketing, both domestic and international, IT, corporate communications and corporate film and design studios to create a schedule of regular updates to museum galleries and digital interactive components due to changing campaigns and strategic focus.
Marketing, Tourism Development & Public Relations Drives increased museum traffic and brand visibility through active media relations, tourism collaboration and partnerships with local, regional and international organizations that support cultural and economic development.
+ Media & Public Relations
+ Serves as the public face and spokesperson for the museum in media interviews, press events and community functions.
+ Coordinates with the corporate communications team to manage messaging and media requests.
+ Builds relationships with tourism writers, bloggers, tour companies, and others in order to garner publicity for the museum.
+ Supports corporate communications when local crises arise and helps monitor social media and other company communication.
+ Marketing & Tourism Development
+ Collaborates with local, regional, state, national and international convention and tourism boards to promote the museum as a destination.
+ Develops joint marketing initiatives with travel groups and tour operators on tourism campaigns.
+ Networks with other museum professionals for mutually beneficial opportunities and support.
+ Community Engagement
+ Actively engages with the downtown business district and community organizations.
+ Coordinates Museum involvement in citywide events, parades and festivals as appropriate.
+ Develops and implements external stakeholder plans with strong emphasis on local projects and initiatives that align with national and global key themes and Hormel Foods goals. Works with corporate communications to amplify events, campaigns and major milestones.
Archives & Historical Preservation Responsible for the company’s repository of historical records and artifacts including procurement, preservation and reporting.
+ Oversees and ensures the proper care, organization and accessibility of the company’s historical artifacts and archives to protect the company’s legacy and support future storytelling.
+ Supports internal and external research requests related to the company’s history.
QUALFICATIONS:
Required
+ Exceptional interpersonal skills with a strong ability to engage diverse audiences, mentor teams, and foster a welcoming, high-energy visitor experience.
+ Strong leadership skills, including the ability to motivate staff, manage conflict and maintain high morale in a dynamic environment.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience developing instructional materials and public presentations.
+ Comfortable serving as the face of the Museum, acting as spokesperson for media, events and promotional campaigns.
+ Strong organizational and time management skills.
+ Demonstrated high level of initiative and ability to work independently.
Preferred
+ Bachelor’s degree in hospitality, tourism, event management, public relations or a related field (or equivalent experience).
+ Skilled in operational planning, including budgeting, vendor management, safety protocols and incident response.
+ Proven ability to coordinate daily operations, optimize staff coverage and ensure a smooth, efficient visitor experience across all touchpoints.
+ Experience building partnerships with tourism boards and local businesses.
+ Familiarity with social impact, accessibility and inclusion principles, especially as they apply to guest experience and community relevance.
+ Experience launching successful events, exhibits, or marketing campaigns that drove foot traffic or enhanced visitor satisfaction.
+ Demonstrated success in community engagement and partnership development, especially with local tourism boards and influencers.
+ Experience with archival systems, including cataloging, digitization and long-term care of collections or artifacts.
+ Ability to curate exhibits that balance entertainment value with historical or cultural context, tailored to diverse visitor interests.
+ Must be a Citizen or National of the United States, a lawful, permanent resident, or have authorization to work in the United States.

**LOCATION:** Austin, MN
A comprehensive relocation package to the Austin, MN area will be offered, if required.
At Hormel Foods, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. The base hiring pay range for the Spam Museum Manager - Spam Museum role is between $72,950 - $102,125 per year, and your actual base pay within that range will depend upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge, skill set, level of experience, and geographic market location.
