The Department of Environmental Quality/Office of Environmental Assessment has a vacancy. This position is located in the Air Field Services section of the Air Planning Division.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety, and welfare.
We're looking for driven, solutions-oriented scientists to join the Office of Environmental Assessment within the Air Planning Division-a team dedicated to protecting Louisiana's air quality through sound science, planning, and infrastructure investment. In accordance with the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment and the Code of Federal Regulations, you'll play a key role in maintaining air quality initiatives that are related to principles, concepts, and techniques of higher mathematics, the physical, chemical, and engineering sciences, and with federal and state rules, regulations and guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field; OR
A master’s degree or doctorate in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
The incumbent of this position performs technical, administrative, and professional work at an advanced level in the Air Field Services Section. This position requires complete understanding of the operation of LADEQ's ambient air monitoring program involving more than 38 monitoring sites statewide. Work is performed in accordance with principles, concepts, and techniques of higher mathematics, the physical, chemical, and engineering sciences, and with federal and state rules, regulations and guidelines related to the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, the Code of Federal Regulations, (CFR) and the Louisiana Environmental Quality Act. The position requires use of a state vehicle in the performance of duties, since these duties frequently require travel to monitoring sites throughout the state. Supervision is received from an Environmental Scientist Supervisor.
+ Collect ambient air data by ensuring that all equipment is maintained and operational at all times. This involves making sure that all equipment is reporting to ProComm, the AirVision system and to the LADEQ webpage. Evaluate, interpret, calculate, validate and report data generated by the analytical system. Assess results in an attempt to regulate environmental effects. Participates in intensive ozone and particulate studies during the summer months. Responsible for the continuous operation of air monitoring stations.
+ Maintain schedule of calibrations, verifications, precision checks and certifications of site instrumentation as part of the QA/QC mandated by the U.S. EPA to retrieve excellent data. Record all documentation in site logbooks and quarterly site excel files. Submit all files to Data Analysis Group and ES Supervisor for review which are filed in EDMS.
+ Troubleshoot and perform maintenance and repairs on instrumentation to make sure a high percentage of data quality is captured for the monitoring network. Determine needs, provide specifications, and recommend the purchase of equipment and supplies to be used within the section.
+ Perform maintenance to ensure that the ambient air monitoring sites are kept neat and orderly – both inside and outside.
+ Miscellaneous job duties.

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment, job appointment (a temporary appointment not to exceed four years), or promotion of permanent classified employee. If the position is filled as a job appointment, it could be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available.

Compensation: This position offers a Special Entrance Rate (SER) listed below. This is the minimum compensation that may be offered. The job title and salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
+ Environmental Scientist 1: $20.91 per hour
+ Environmental Scientist 2: $22.38 per hour
+ Environmental Scientist 3: $25.62 per hour
