The Department of Environmental Quality/Office of Environmental Services has a vacancy.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety and welfare.
We’re looking for driven, solutions-oriented individuals to join the Office of Environmental Services within the Public Participation & Permit Support Division. You’ll play a key role in ensuring that the agency receives quality environmental data from commercial laboratories through the Louisiana Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field; OR
A master’s degree or doctorate in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
The incumbent performs highly technical and complex scientific work at the advanced journeyman level in the Louisiana Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program, Public Participation and Permit Support Division, Office of Environmental Services, Department of Environmental Quality. The incumbent serves as the lead assessor in the laboratory accreditation program. This program ensures that the agency receives quality environmental data from commercial laboratories. The work involves review of accreditation applications and on-site assessment of quality assurance systems and procedures associated with the analyses of non-potable water, wastewater, waste sludge, soils, sediments, air, radiation, and biological tissue samples. The incumbent is required to travel frequently to perform on-site assessments. The work is performed in accordance with state laws and regulations and the national accreditation program standards.
Assesses laboratories and emission testers seeking accreditation. Acts as lead assessor for on-site assessment conducted by the laboratory accreditation program. Ensures that the information provided on the application accurately portrays the laboratory. Reviews laboratory standard operating procedures, analytical data, completed laboratory reports, equipment logbooks, maintenance logbooks, training records, and other laboratory documents while on-site. Must be able to determine whether the laboratory has an effective quality system and that the laboratory employees are aware of the requirements. Ensures that the laboratory seeking or renewing accreditation is compliant with state or federal regulations and, where applicable, The National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference Institute standards. Reviews and responds to proficiency test results, corrective action plans, standard operating procedures, quality assurance plans, or any other correspondence submitted by the laboratory.
+ Reviews accreditation applications. Evaluates, interprets, and prepares reports regarding the information provided on each accreditation application received by the Department. Reviews each application for completeness. Notifies the applicant of any deficiencies identified on the application. Schedules the on-site assessment once the application is complete.
+ Prepares certificates and accompanying documents (scopes of accreditation) describing the accreditation granted to applicants who successfully complete the accreditation process.
+ Reviews and responds to assessment reports, corrective action plan responses, or any other correspondence submitted by the contract assessors.
+ Participates in training courses and seminars when appropriate in order to increase the level of technical expertise needed to assess laboratories.
+ Assists in the training of lower level personnel on procedures within the work unit. Assists in informing the regulated community through workshop or seminars. Serves as an expert witness and provides technical testimony at hearings and enforcement proceedings relevant to the accreditation status of a laboratory.
+ Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor, manager, or administrator for the Program.
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type:This position may be filled as either a probational appointment, job appointment (a temporary appointment not to exceed four years), or promotion of permanent classified employee. If the position is filled as a job appointment, it could be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available.

Compensation: This position offers a Special Entrance Rate (SER) listed below. This is the minimum compensation that may be offered. The job title and salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
+ Environmental Scientist 1: $20.91 per hour
+ Environmental Scientist 2: $22.38 per hour
+ Environmental Scientist 3: $25.62 per hour
