Johnson and Johnson Innovative Medicine is seeking a Senior Distinguished Scientist to be located in Spring House, Pennsylvania. #LI-Hybrid
The Senior Distinguished Scientist will be an integral part of the Preclinical Sciences and Translational Safety (PSTS) function, working deeply in portfolio science as needed to on behalf of the PSTS leadership team. PSTS encompasses a breadth of disciplines including Nonclinical safety, Translational Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic and Investigative toxicology, Pathobiology, Strategy and Integrated Sciences, and Bioanalytical Sciences that work to deliver the discovery and development pipeline for J&J Innovative Medicine.
This role is for a recognized expert individual contributor that leads strategic and complex preclinical and translational safety projects, involving cross-functional teams within J&J Innovative Medicine R&D and also with external collaborators. This externally recognized individual in the toxicology and safety assessment field will have multi-modality experience with the discovery and development and registration of pharmaceutics. The successful candidate will have a good track record of influencing the pharmaceutical industry across regions, sectors and functions. M.D., or D.V.M. plus PhD, pathology board certification in addition to toxicology board certification is required.
This role will work with PSTS leaders to drive the integration of scientific expertise with drug development activities including strategies for innovation platforms and pipeline projects. As needed, also leads projects/initiatives aimed to influence the external drug discovery & preclinical/clinical development community, in particular health authorities. This PSTS leadership role encompasses significant complexity and breadth spanning all PSTS disciplines and interfaces with DPDS, and other J&J IM R&D cross-functional teams.
Job Description:
90% Role:
Working with PSTS and R&D senior leaders, executes the internal drug discovery/clinical plan and initiatives to support pipeline discovery and advancement. In particular:
+ Accountable for assuring scientific quality and milestone (or partnership/acquisition) readiness for portfolio (or due diligence, DD) assets discussed during PSTS functional project/portfolio meetings or other forums, working with PSTS teams and leaders as well as cross R&D partners as needed.
+ Serve as a point of coordination for portfolio science as delegated by PSTS global functional leaders.
+ Advances other scientists through consultation, mentoring, and collaborative leadership to build depth of capability and functional (matrix) leadership.
+ Ensures translation of PSTS insights for assets (including DD) into portfolio value/opportunities by working with PSTS leaders in scientific arenas of high priority.
+ Serves as a lead for PSTS on acquisitions or PSTS diligence teams
+ Translates scientific/biological knowledge gaps across modalities into strategy aimed to gain novel insights and to address/resolve knowledge gaps
+ Serves as a liaison to operations teams as needed to help coordinate and communicate scientific, portfolio priorities
**10% role:** In addition to the above, the leader will:
+ Participate in shaping PSTS strategy through contributing ideas and championing/sponsoring PSTS prioritized strategic initiatives.
+ Proactively create a purpose-driven environment by aligning Johnson & Johnson’s Credo and Leadership Imperatives with the PSTS and R&D strategies and goals of the team and enterprise.
+ Engage, motivate, and build strong productive teams working on conjugated therapeutics.
+ Be a role model for our leadership imperatives and translate these into specific actions/initiatives with both the PSTS teams and partners.
+ Provide mentorship toward our PSTS goal to develop future, outstanding preclinical science experts and through creating and upholding a culture of engagement, scientific rigor, inclusion, program impact and innovation
+ Maintenance and expansion of external impact through continuous learning, external and intentional networking engagement, scientific rigor, inclusion, program impact and innovation.
+ 15% Travel
Qualifications:
Minimum Education: PhD plus MD or DVM Other DABT plus DACVP
+ Experience and training is required in a field related to toxicology, cancer biology, pathology, biochemistry, immunology, or a related discipline.
+ Breadth of experience in working in the disciplines of Preclinical Sciences and Translational Safety (e.g. nonclinical safety, pharmacokinetics, bioanalysis, molecular pathobiology)
+ Demonstrated experience in managing and mentoring scientific team(s) with both direct and indirect people management experience, and an ability to grow and develop talent at multiple levels.
+ Significant leadership experience in complex organizations and will have shown the ability to navigate and lead within a highly matrixed environment.
+ Previous experience with prioritizing competing portfolio demands, managing budgets, and internal/external resources, and operational leadership across multiple sites/teams.
+ Strong track record of individual and team-level contributions to discovery and development programs is required.
+ Expert knowledge and experience in multiple modalities (e.g. siRNA, ADC, small molecules) therapeutic discovery and development
+ Deep scientific track record of expertise in preclinical drug development, as well as the ability to present externally should be demonstrated from a drug development experience, examples of presenting to senior leadership, and external eminence.
+ A record of success in partnering effectively with multiple, diverse types of research organizations, including academic institutions, contract research organizations, and public-private consortia should also be demonstrated.
The anticipated base range for this role is: $226,000-$391,000.
