Position Summary
Thompson Engineering is seeking a Structural Designer I to join our growing team. This is an entry-level role supporting engineering design projects under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer. The Structural Designer I will assist with calculations, design layouts, drawings, and specifications to ensure high-quality and timely deliverables that align with project objectives.
This position may also involve duties typically assigned to a Project Manager. The role requires a strong foundation in drafting tools and basic engineering principles, particularly in structural and bridge design.
Essential Functions
+ Apply relevant codes, standards, and emerging industry practices in project work.
+ Assist in addressing engineering inquiries from clients or third parties.
+ Operate AutoCAD and/or Revit proficiently for design and drafting tasks.
+ Demonstrate foundational understanding of structural and/or bridge design.
+ Interpret construction specifications, plans, and related regulations.
+ Support structural design projects, with preference for bridge-related experience.
+ Understand applicable laws, codes, and policies within the engineering discipline.
+ Collaborate effectively with teams or work independently as needed.
+ Manage workloads and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
+ Apply knowledge of materials, construction methods, and techniques.
+ Estimate time and resources required for assigned tasks.
+ Comply with Thompson Engineering's safety and quality assurance standards.
Other Responsibilities
+ Perform other duties as assigned to support project and company goals.
Minimum Requirements
+ Associate's degree in Drafting and Design Technology (or equivalent preferred).
+ Minimum 2 years of experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
+ Experience in structural and/or bridge design, individually and collaboratively.
+ Revit experience is preferred.
+ Strong background in developing detailed engineering drawings.
+ Ability to follow Thompson Engineering's CAD and quality control standards.
+ Translate general direction into accurate, detailed design documents.
+ Communicate ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
Physical Requirements
+ Flexibility to work extended hours and overtime based on project needs.
+ Ability to sit for prolonged periods and work on a computer.
