Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Located on New York City's Museum Mile, in the historic Carnegie Mansion and Garden, Cooper Hewitt is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. Responsibilities The Facilities Services Worker Supervisor is responsible for supervising all loading dock activities, motor vehicle operations, and facilities services. The museum proper is located in New York City (Manhattan) and the storage facility is located in Newark, NJ. In this position, you will: Serve as the supervisor for the Facilities Services staff. Duties include the following: assigning tasks; establishing deadlines; providing on-the-job training; investigating and resolving work related problems; implementing corrective actions; scheduling and approving leave; determining training needs and providing performance appraisals. Interpret provided instructions in order to communicate work status, progress and delays, both verbally and in writing. Serve as the Loading Dock Coordinator. Responsibilities include loading dock safety and management. Duties include the receiving, storing, safeguarding, shipping and ordering of supplies. Inspect motor vehicles, ensuring that they are properly serviced and operating on schedule. Must have a valid State or District of Columbia driver's license. Physical Requirements: This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods. Qualifications In order to be rated qualified, an applicant's overall experience and training must indicate possession of the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education Additional Information This position is not included in the bargaining unit.
