BAYADA Hospice is actively seeking a **Full Time National Hospice Medical Director** to work **remotely, ideally located within commutable distance to our Pennsauken, NJ headquarters.**
**Position Summary:** This physician leader will develop clinical strategy and provide leadership and coaching to large, multi-site teams of Hospice Medical Directors, Hospice Physicians, and Advanced Practitioners. This individual will collaboratively design and implement standards and best practices of hospice and palliative care medicine to ensure delivery of the highest quality hospice and palliative care to patients, families, and communities.
**Travel required:** 25%
**Schedule:** full time Monday-Friday, Eastern time zone
Qualifications for a National Hospice Medical Director:
+ Exemplifies characteristics of The BAYADA Way: compassion, excellence and reliability.
+ Four (4) year college degree. Graduate from an accredited and approved medical program as indicated by school transcript or diploma, and as required by state regulations.
+ Licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy without restriction and able to provide proof of current licensure.
+ Board Certified in Pediatrics, Family Medicine, or Internal Medicine, or a related specialty is required.
+ Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine is required.
+ Board Certified as Hospice Medical Director preferred.
+ Minimum five (5) to ten (10) years of experience providing medical direction and supervision to teams of medical staff in a multi-site community-based hospice setting.
+ Experience developing and implementing standards of care, medical protocols, quality assurance standards and monitoring, and professional training and education.
+ Experience implementing new clinical operating processes and systems to improve efficiency; knowledge of, and experience with, Electronic Health Records and/or related automated systems is a plus.
+ Experience managing surveys and audits, both internal and external.
+ Solid, proven managerial and administrative skills and expertise. Demonstrated ability to provide accurate and helpful performance feedback to others, especially direct reports, that results in performance improvement.
+ Creative skill, ability, resourcefulness, and judgment in analyzing and solving medical, managerial, and administrative problems.
+ Demonstrated leadership ability, including team management, conflict mediation, and change management.
+ Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills.
+ Extensive knowledge of the ethical and professional standards of the medical profession; applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations, including those related to the health and safety of clients; hospice policies and procedures; and accreditation and certification requirements, including CHAP.
+ Maintenance of a valid registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and any applicable state agency without any limitations on the authority to prescribe drugs under such registration. Must provide current proof of registration upon request.
+ Maintenance of unrestricted medical staff membership and clinical admitting privileges at any of the hospice’s inpatient facilities, as requested by BAYADA Home Health Care.
+ Acceptable pre-employment assessment results.
+ Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.
Responsibilities for a National Hospice Medical Director:
+ Demonstrate and communicate the core values of BAYADA and The BAYADA Way.
+ Develop working knowledge of BAYADA’s mission, services, people, organization, policies and procedures.
+ Establish evidence-based standards and best practices to ensure clients receive the highest quality of care possible, and design processes and training materials to facilitate adoption by Hospice Medical Directors, Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, and associated care teams.
+ Assist with recruiting hospice physicians, medical directors, and advanced practitioners.
+ Onboard, train, and supervise all new medical directors (may delegate to a qualified divisional Medical Director), and create a mechanism for ongoing assessment and feedback.
+ Develop and implement on-site training sessions; assess need for and coordinate professional educational and training programs on relevant hospice and palliative medicine topics, such as prognostication, determining relatedness, deprescribing, and other pertinent topics.
+ Maintain weekly or biweekly touchpoints with medical directors to create collegial environment and develop leadership capabilities.
+ Provide regular performance feedback to all direct reports and assist in the development and implementation of individual development plans as needed.
+ Lead the design and continuous improvement of policies and processes governing physician services to enhance operational efficiency, ensure regulatory compliance, and mitigate organizational risk.
+ Provide clinical leadership, coaching, and ongoing professional development to hospice physicians and medical directors to ensure consistent, high-quality patient care and alignment with organizational standards.
+ Deliver performance management conversations, including counseling reports, performance improvement plans (PIP), and input into annual performance reviews to medical directors and advanced practitioners in partnership with the Division Director, as needed.
+ Provide medical expertise on pain and symptom management topics to admission clinicians and the hospice interdisciplinary group to enhance the quality of care delivered.
+ Examine, revise, and continually enhance existing medical care standards, protocols, and practices to reflect up to date evidenced based practices, and/or changes as directed by licensing, funding, or program organizations.
+ Develop and implement Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) projects in collaboration with practice clinical lead, which measure and monitor progress toward problem prone and high-risk activities to achieve target goals and improve outcomes.
+ Conduct regular chart reviews and audits on a spot-check basis in addition to, and as part of, ongoing QAPI programs:
+ a. Systematically monitor the Hospice Medical Director and Hospice Physician’s narrative statements to ensure that documentation is thorough, comprehensive, and reflects eligibility criteria, related diagnoses, comorbid conditions, and secondary conditions that impact prognosis.
+ b. Systematically monitor the Hospice Medical Director, Hospice Physician, and Nurse Practitioner visit notes to ensure that documentation of the visit supports the complexity of the assigned CPT code.
+ Create and oversee a well-documented process that ensures proper Hospice Medical Director and Hospice Physician participation and support in IDG meetings, including education, documentation, and thorough discussions of deaths, discharges, admissions, and recertifications
+ Actively participate and/or lead ethical case reviews and the peer review process.
+ Provide expert medical testimony in legal proceedings that substantiates the medical necessity and appropriateness of hospice care provided to patients, as deemed appropriate by BAYADA leadership.
+ Ensure the development and maintenance of statistical data related to patient care and patient outcomes to continually improve medical practices in collaboration with QAS and the Hospice practice.
+ Maintain current knowledge of and follow standards of practice pertaining to BAYADA’s policies and procedures, and regulations (government, contract, and accrediting body).
+ Demonstrate solid performance or exceed performance standards in key job dimensions/attributes as defined on the Performance Appraisal for Office Staff
+ Perform related duties, or as required or requested by supervisor.
