This pivotal role is responsible for leading American Indian Education initiatives within the agency. It demands a visionary leader who can collaboratively chart strategic courses of action for the Minnesota Department of Education, ultimately fostering a cohesive and dynamic direction to advancing the agency’s objectives for the state.
Reporting to the Commissioner of Education, the American Indian Education Director is responsible for the duties defined for the Indian Education Director in Minnesota Statute 124D.791. This position provides leadership, policy development, program design and implementation of a comprehensive program for educational excellence and accountability for American Indian students. This position will work with MDE, Tribal and public schools, TNEC, federal and state agencies and elected officials to fulfill desired outcomes and to foster a mutual understanding on issues affecting American Indian tribal communities. The position serves as the liaison for the Department of Education with the Tribal Nations Education Committee (TNEC).
With a mandate to develop and implement policies and programs, this role is instrumental in advancing educational equity for American Indian students and their families
Minimum Qualifications
3 years of leadership experience managing related programs, including strategic planning and directing the work of staff.
Experience must include:
+ Thorough understanding of federal and state policies and programs impacting American Indian Education.
+ Experience working with Tribal Nations, Urban Indian communities, and/or Tribal Governments.
+ Excellent written and oral communications skills to effectively lead complex and multi-faceted policies and programs.
+ Ability to work effectively, build relationships, and resolve issues with agency and program leadership as well as external partners.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Expertise managing budgets and team resources to move work forward.
+ Strong ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups - including public addresses and formal presentations.
+ Advanced policy analysis experience and/or advanced legislative experience impacting Tribal and Urban Indian communities.
+ Strong ability to solve problems among diverse interests and constituency groups and policy directions, considering organizational structures, practices and competing priorities.
+ Variety of experiences working effectively with others from different backgrounds and cultures.
