Position performs skilled work and specializes in at least one trade in connection with the maintenance, repair and/or construction of buildings and facilities, and associated systems. Position functions at the intermediate- advanced level in skilled trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or water/wastewater O&M. Work assignments are complex in nature and vary widely depending on the current needs of the Division. Examples of common assignments include, but are not limited to, siding and roofing repairs, flooring installation, exterior and interior lighting, ferry ramp electrical issue troubleshooting and repair, concrete work, lock/door handle replacement, HVAC troubleshooting and repair, water/wastewater treatment system troubleshooting and repair, plumbing repairs, and design and construction of basic structures. Position is expected to work independently on diverse projects and to possess basic organizational, planning, and administrative skills needed to manage projects while receiving minimal support from supervisors. Position requires frequent travel as the service area includes the Manns Harbor Shipyard, Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach Ferry, Cedar Island Ferry, Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry, and Pamlico River Ferry terminals. Overnight travel is not regular but may be necessary for certain projects. This position is occasionally given responsibly for special projects and assignments directed by higher level supervisors and works directly for the Facility Maintenance Supervisor.
Duties include but not limited to:
Electrical: Perform skilled electrical repairs, replacements, and installations (e.g., conduit, wiring, switches, breakers, lighting, motors, generators, controllers, key systems). Use diagnostic tools (e.g., voltmeters, amp meters) and work per the National Electrical Code.
HVAC: Repair, replace, and install HVAC systems (e.g., steam, hot water, AC, chillers). Utilize tools such as airflow meters, refrigerant gauges, and perform brazing. Follow NFPA, NEC, IBC, UBC, BOCA, and NRC codes.
Carpentry: Construct, renovate, and repair structures including offices and storage. Tasks include framing, roofing, flooring, drywall, and finish work using various power tools. Interpret blueprints and comply with state building codes.
Plumbing: Install, repair, or replace plumbing fixtures and piping (e.g., sinks, toilets, pumps, heaters). Use materials like PVC, copper, and PEX, with tools for cutting and threading. Follow NC Plumbing Code.
Water & Wastewater System Maintenance: Operate and maintain water/wastewater systems per permit requirements. Collect samples, make repairs, and assist in planning upgrades and overhauls to ensure compliance and system integrity. The individual selected for this position is required to obtain specific water and wastewater licenses by dates established in their Performance Plan

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F
