This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV position in the Surry County Bridge Maintenance Unit. The Transportation Worker IV will perform manual and equipment operational work involved in the maintenance and replacement of bridges, pipes, and reinforced concrete box culverts. The selected applicant will utilize working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures. Work includes a wide variety of skills utilized in the functional areas including pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, equipment operation, contract inspection, repair of bridges, culverts/, large pipe and headwalls. Additional duties will include sandblasting and painting, demolition work, trenching and shoring, lead paint removal and steel fabrication and straightening of steel beams, oxygen/acetylene cutting and electric ARC, MIG, and TIG welding. The selected applicant will adhere to all work zone safety traffic control and flagging operation standards. Installation and maintenance of erosion control Work will be assigned and supervised by a Transportation Supervisor. The position will be subject to working during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and times of emergency. his position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces of equipment as needed on the various crews. Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. Must be able to train others in equipment operation as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation, manual tree and bush removal, debris and liter removal, snow plowing, spreading salt and salt brine application. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. These positions respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. These positions are also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
+ Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
+ Demonstrated ability supervising and training others in equipment operations.
+ Working experience as the Lead Worker on a crew without supervision.
+ Experience reading and interpreting plans, calculating quantities and placing orders, plan reading and layout, directing drilling and cutting of holes, directing erection of steel beams and bridge components
+ Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
Additional Expectations:
Safety shoes required. Must be able to operate State vehicle and assigned equipment effectively. Follow instructions to complete assigned tasks without supervision. Use of tools associated with related Bridge maintenance and/or construction activities. Physical activities required are standing, walking in uneven terrain, climbing, lifting a minimum of 50lbs., talking and hearing. Also exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Must not be afraid of heights. Ability to obtain welding certification through On the Job training within 360 days of hire date.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License that must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
