Responsibilities Utilizes the applicable tenders and tariffs completing a manual rating process based on freight classification, type of equipment utilized, weight, and mileage criteria. Determines the most effective means of expediting shipments with urgent delivery dates that cannot be transported through normal channels. Reviews automated documentation for all types of shipments taking appropriate action to correct any invalid, void, or missing information. Contacts freight forwarders to ship Foreign Military Sales (FMS) shipments and monitors requisitions through the automated process. Coordinates with Command (C) to make direct bookings to various overseas destinations for containers. Prepares documentation associated with the surface, air and vessel shipment of hazardous freight. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for a Transportation Assistant, your resume and supporting documentation must support: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-06 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Performs freight shipment and transportation support functions through various transportation systems ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timely movement of material to CONUS and/or OCONUS customers. Assist private industry carriers, drivers, Depot functional managers, Traffic Management Specialists and/or the Depot Traffic Manager or other personnel regarding contract requirements and adherence. Experience through formal training with required hazardous material classes for transportation personnel with a passing grade for retention in the position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands Frequent periods of walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items, such as paper or small boxes may be required. While performing transportation support functions within the freight terminal/warehouse, there will be stooping, standing, bending, walking, and carrying light items; frequently exposed to conditions such as loud noise from operating forklifts, fumes, and odors from forklifts; possible injury from accidental slipping and falling while working and walking in the warehouse area. Must wear safety shoes and gloves while working the freight terminal/warehouse area and follow safety procedures and requirements to offset adverse conditions to avoid accidents or injury. Work Environment The work is performed in an office setting involving everyday risks or discomforts. Frequently required to go into the freight terminal/warehouse area to obtain information, check stock, and must exercise care when working around material handling equipment (MHE), conveyors and freight. The warehouse area/freight terminal, depending on the weather, and season of the year, areas could be hot, cold, damp, drafty, and poorly lit. The stock could be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Exposed to scrapes, bruises, cuts and injury from MHE, and/or from mechanical conveyor systems. Education Education: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position. GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study. FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
