    General Description

    This position is responsible for scheduling and participating in the preventive maintenance and second echelon repair work on motorized fire equipment used by the Rochester Fire Department, such as gas and diesel powered trucks, pumps, aerial ladders, automobiles and service vehicles. The work focuses on vehicle repair and overhaul, including complete dismantling of engines. The priorities are set by and the work is performed under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Fire Equipment Maintenance. Supervision is exercised over several Senior Fire Equipment Mechanics. Employees are required to work irregular hours, rotate shifts, and be on-call. Related work is performed as required.

     

    This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.

     

    A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three.     CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.

     

    Typical Work Activities

     

    + Supervises, participates and provides technical assistance on complex repairs on cars, light and heavy trucks (both gasoline and diesel), pumps, aerial ladders, hydraulic systems, and other fire apparatus;

    + Supervises and performs preventive maintenance of motor vehicles and motorized equipment assigned to the division;

    + Interprets work orders, read schematics, sketches and technical instructions and specifications;

    + Schedules the work load of mechanics; assigning work based on their abilities;

    + Inspects and tests the motor vehicles and various fire equipment to insure that they are properly maintained, safely equipped, and inspected according to City and State regulations;

    + Obtains price quotations and places orders for parts and materials used in the repair and maintenance of fire equipment;

    + Coordinates repairs of equipment with private vendors and warranty service providers;

    + Prepares and maintains a preventive maintenance schedule for all major pieces of equipment;

    + Maintains a computer based equipment inventory and current status report;

    + Modify equipment and apparatus to suit the special needs for fire fighting operations: including design, fabrication and alterations;

    + Maintains reports for mileage, work orders, repair orders, outside billable expenses, attendance, performance, and payroll;

    + Transports motor vehicles or motorized equipment to and from repair sites;

    + Analyzes equipment to determine the extent of repair needed, labor and time required to complete, and makes recommendations for scheduling, referral to contracts, service, or replacement;

    + Enforces City and Bureau safety policy through regular inspections of facilities and equipment;

    + Assists training division with yearly testing and certification of aerial devices and pumps;

    + Trains and counsels subordinates in safety practices and meets regularly with them to discuss safety concerns.

    Minimum Qualifications

    High school diploma or Equivalent AND:

    I. A. Associate’s degree in Automotive Mechanics, Automotive Technology or closely related field PLUS three (3) years of work experience (full-time or its part-time equivalent) in the repair and maintenance of all the following: light and heavy duty trucks, gasoline and diesel engines, electric motors, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and the use of diagnostic software; OR

    I. B. Five (5) years of work experience (full-time or its part-time equivalent) as defined in A. above;

    PLUS

    II. One (1) year of work experience in the repair and maintenance of fire equipment and fire apparatus. This experience may be included or in addition to the qualifying experience in I. A or B

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Possession and maintenance of a valid New York State Class A or B Commercial Driver's License without air brake restriction at time of appointment.

    2. Possession and maintenance of a valid New York State Inspector’s License within six (6) months of appointment.

    3. Possession and maintenance of the following three (3) certifications issued by the EVT Certification Commission within twelve (12) months of appointment:

    + F-1 - Maintenance, inspection, and testing of fire Apparatus

    + F-3 - Fire pumps and accessories

    + F-5 - Aerial Fire Apparatus

    4. Must own appropriate tools to perform the job.

    5. Must be available and willing to work all shifts as assigned.
