    The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is currently seeking a Forestry Equipment Operator (Equipment Operator IV). This equipment operator position is required to operate various pieces of construction equipment including backhoes, excavators, front-end loaders, dump trucks, vacuum-flushing trucks, and street sweepers to support general storm water operations and the city’s street sweeping operation. This position is a leadership role, and the selected candidate will be the lead equipment operator, responsible for training other equipment operators and maintenance workers while assisting the structure repair and ditch maintenance crews.

    Department Hiring Salary: $41,775

    Essential Functions

    Essential functions include but are not limited to:

    + Provides equipment operating expertise operating caterpillar loader, bobcat mini skid steers, multiple stump grinders, grapple truck and crane equipment. Maintains and operates heavy construction equipment such as cranes, bulldozers, lowboy trailers, dump trucks, backhoes and trailers by securing equipment with of chains and binders, providing assistance to yard crew, performing minor maintenance and repair, checking equipment for fuel, fluids and safety, loading and unloading equipment on trailers and lowboys and transporting to job site.

    + Stockpiles bulk materials by loading, unloading and separating materials as needed. Supervises mulch making operations in absence of Forestry Crew Leader by directing other permanent or temporary field staff in wood recycling support operations.

    + Provides training and support by mentoring and guiding other team members on heavy equipment operation such as front-end loaders, grapple trucks, crane trucks, stump grinders, mini skid steers, chippers and chainsaws providing emergency response recovery including snow and storm debris removal.

    + In absence of Forestry Crew Leader completes all necessary administrative tasks and supervisory tasks as assigned

    + Responds to emergencies by removing storm damage debris.

    Education/Experience

    Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

     

    Four years experience in equipment operations.

     

    Class "B" CDL with Air Brakes Endorsement required

    Work Location: 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA 23509

     

    Work Hours: Tuesday through Friday, 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM. 40 hours per week

    + Retirement

     

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
