This is an internal recruitment only for current qualified classified City of Reno Employees
This recruitment will only be used to fill Streets Division vacancies.
The ideal candidate in this position will lead, oversee and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for performing a wide variety of maintenance and repair functions on various City facilities and infrastructure such as streets, signs, fountains, planters, trash cans, and related public works structures; operates a variety of heavy trucks and maintenance equipment; and ensures adherence to safe work procedures and practices.
We currently have one vacancy in the Streets Division of the Maintenance and Operations Department, in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.
This is an internal recruitment to provide a promotional opportunity for all qualified current classified City of Reno employees.

Examples of Essential Functions
+ Lead, oversee, plan, train, and review the work of all lower level maintenance staff responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and repair work on various City facilities and structures such as streets, signs, fountains, planters, trash cans, and related public works structures; participate in performing the most complex work of the unit including assisting the supervisor with day-to-day job planning and scheduling.
+ Train assigned employees in their areas of work including maintenance and repair methods, procedures and techniques.
+ Supervise the use, care and operation of appropriate Maintenance and Operations tools and equipment including saws, hammers, shovels, light trucks, and heavy equipment.
+ Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
+ Operate a variety of heavy trucks and specialized equipment including paving machines, grinders, paint stripers, street sweepers, backhoes, excavators, skid steer loaders, mowers, graders, rollers, water trucks and large front end loaders.
+ Oversee and participate in performing a variety of complex tasks in the repair of City streets and right of ways including: removal and replacement of asphalt, overlays, crack sealing, pot hole patching, and painting of traffic markings to include cross walks, stop bars, directional arrows, lane markers, center lines, parking spaces, meter posts, barricades and traffic islands.
+ Perform a variety of complex tasks in the maintenance of drainage ditches including: vegetation reduction and removal, sediment removal, grading, and culvert replacement.
+ Operate snow plows, sanders, and related snow removal equipment as required in the removal of snow and ice.
+ Perform routine and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment per manufacturer's guidelines.
+ Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
+ Maintain inventory of parts and supplies; estimate time and materials needed for jobs assigned, requisition tools and supplies as required.
+ Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints or refer to higher level staff.
+ Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:
Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and/or construction of public or private streets, sewers and storm drains, or related public works facilities and structures including either two (2) years at a level comparable to a Maintenance Worker II or four (4) years at a level comparable to a Maintenance Worker I.
License or Certificate:
+ Possession of valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
+ Possession of flagger certification.

Examination Process:
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination process will consist of a Written Examination along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:
+ Written Examination = 70%
+ Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 30%
Written Examination:
Written Examination – July 30, 2025 – Testing times will be dependent on the number of candidates. A scheduling email will be sent out after the posting has closed.

Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details:
The T&E examination consists of a Supplemental Questionnaire. The questions may be viewed online under the tab marked"QUESTIONS" on the job announcement page. The T&E must be submitted online at the time of application.
+ Responses to your T&E questions should be consistent with the information given in your application details. Answers are subject to verification.
+ Failure to complete all of the questions or incomplete responses will result in a lower score; therefore, it is advantageous for you to provide a full and complete response to each supplemental question.

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:
On promotional examinations (Rule VIII, Section 9), in the event of tie scores resulting from final rating, including seniority points, a classified employee will be awarded veteran's preference and provided a rank preference if one (1) of the eligibles has submitted proof of honorable discharge from the military service. This preference will only be administered in the event of tie scores. Documentation must be submitted at the time of application.
Seniority Points:
Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:
The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.

Appointment and Certification:
Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
