Position Summary
HIGHLIGHTS
Milne Library is seeking a dedicated individual to join their team as a Library Assistant 1. In this role, you will assist the Head of Access Services and Library Assistant 2 (Senior Interlibrary Loan Clerk) in overseeing the day-to-day work of the Resource Sharing office. Duties will include:
+ processing lending requests
+ responding to patron & library inquiries
+ coordinating the shipping and receiving of physical materials
Additionally, you will assist the Head of Collection management with stacks maintenance, supporting the Teacher Education Resource Center, digitization projects, and the processing of book donations.

We are accepting applicants for NYS HELPS appointments, you do not need to be on the Library Assistant 1 list to be appointed. You must meet the qualifications as outlined in the “Required Qualifications” section below.
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have permanent appointment in a Library Assistant 1, SG-09 classified position; OR be reachable for appointment on the current New York State Civil Service canvass list for SUNY Geneseo’s area location for the Library Assistant 1, SG-09; OR be eligible via transfer.
For NYS HELPS Eligibility
You must meet ONE of the following qualifications:
1. Graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma AND one year of full-time clerical experience in a library setting.
Examples of qualifying clerical duties in a library setting may include:
+ Maintaining circulation record;
+ Processing acquisitions including the receipt and recording of courier-delivered materials and organizing new items;
+ Creating and processing interlibrary loan requests ( ILL );
+ Assisting in collection maintenance including; weeding, shifting, re-shelving, repairing, straightening, inventory, supply orders, and emptying book drop containers to be checked in;
+ Assisting and educating patrons in searching the library catalog;
+ Assisting patrons in the use of library equipment
OR
2. Thirty semester credit hours of college study including at least NINE semester credit hours of college study in any combination of the following areas:
+ Library/Information Science;
+ Computer Applications
+ Information Studies
