    Job Summary

    Hawkeye Community College is seeking a full-time Accountant II to join our Foundation team in the Institutional Advancement office.

     

    The Institutional Advancement team brings together the Foundation and Resource Development departments. We are a group of experienced and dedicated professionals who work collaboratively to support one another. Each team member plays a vital role in our shared success, and this position is essential in helping us reach our full potential. Our work is centered on advancing the mission of our campus, supporting our community, and creating meaningful opportunities for our students.

     

    Specifically, as our Accountant II, you play a vital role in ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of our financial operations. You are responsible for the day-to-day accounting functions that support our mission, including transaction processing, reconciliations, cash flow management, investment oversight, and the preparation and analysis of financial statements and board reports. Additionally, you contribute to audit preparation and ensure compliance with accounting standards, Foundation policies, and donor intentions. Your work directly supports the responsible stewardship of funds that impact student success and community advancement—making your contributions essential to both our present operations and our long-term vision.

    Essential Job Functions

    Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    + Performs data entry for all cash receipts, expenditures, and journal entries into the accounting system.

    + Prepares and makes Foundation deposits and monitors cash flow needs between deposit and investment accounts.

    + Processes deposit and investment account entries, including calculation of investment earnings; allocation of investment earnings to foundation fund accounts, and perform regular reconciliations.

    + Generates Foundation checks for approved account withdrawal reviewing for appropriateness with established fund guidelines and policies with appropriate approvals and proper nonprofit guidance. Maintains documentation and records with withdrawals.

    + Coordinates funds availability for scholarships with financial aid and scholarship coordinator for proper awarding and payment. This includes Endowment Spending Policy calculations.

    + Prepares monthly and quarterly reports for review by executive director, board of directors and finance committees in addition to fund reports for the deans, faculty and department heads and donors and communicates with responsible party about any analysis or questions.

    + Enters and maintains financial and general information in accounting software and CRM software systems/databases.

    + Manages software contracts and updates for foundation specific software with in collaboration with CIS department.

    + Partners with grant administrators to manage grant funds held by the HCC Foundation.

    + Gathers financial information and prepares reports for various grant related needs.

    + Assists the Executive Director with projects and policy development related to financial information and management.

    + Administers Foundation student loan programs including preparation of loan documents, credit approval, processing payments, and loan collection efforts.

    + Maintains records of uncollectible loans for management and collection through the state offset program and private collection.

    + Communicates with employers for maintenance of forgivable loan programs.

    + Assists with annual employee campaign and capital campaigns through pledge forms, pledge reminders, enrollment meetings, and analysis of annual campaigns.

    + Maintains payroll pledge records in Donor Management software, processing bi-weekly payroll pledges, writing off uncollectible pledges and reconciliation of pledges in the accounting and donor software

    + Develops quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.

    + Prepares annual audit workpapers to support the financial statements and footnotes.

    + Coordinates reconciliation with donor software and accounting software for contributions.

    + Prepares year-end gift receipts for donors, year-end 1099 and 1098 forms, State of Iowa Biennial Report, sales tax filing and assist in preparation and review of the 990-year-end filing.

    + Remains up to date with accounting and non-profit practice and regulations.

    + Assists with Foundation and College events as needed.

    + Participates in Foundation committees such as Finance & Investment and Scholarships including coordination of meetings and preparation of reports.

    + Participates in campus committees as assigned.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    + Unless otherwise approved under Hawkeye’s remote work policy, regular on campus and/or onsite attendance is considered an essential function of the position

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field and two (2) years of experience in accounting or auditing or a combination of education and related experience to total six (6) years.

    + Knowledge of principles and practices of general and non-profit fund accounting and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

    + Knowledge of operations of a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation and applicable Federal and state regulations.

    + Knowledge and ability to perform financial analysis of financial statements, funds, and various reconciliations.

    + Demonstrated ability to work with a wide array of students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

    + Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal communication.

    + Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, and video conferencing technology.

    + Demonstrated ability to execute organization and department policies and procedures.

    + Demonstrated ability to handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Experience in nonprofit accounting practices and financial management.

    + Experience in planning, coordinating and/or participating in audits.

    + Familiar with investment strategies and portfolio management.

     

    Working Conditions

     

    Anticipated schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm with occasional weekend and/or evening hours based on events and business need.

     

    Work is performed either in or a combination of an office setting and/or classroom setting using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move frequently during working hours. During course of day, interact with students, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computers.

     

    Employment Status

     

    Full-time, exempt position with comprehensive or competitive benefits program including health, dental, vision, life, and LTD insurance, a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expenses; holiday, personal, sick, and vacation leave; tuition reimbursement; and a choice of retirement programs—IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA (defined contribution).

     

    + Salary will be considered with the candidate’s education and experience.

    + The salary range for this position begins at $56,093.
