Job Summary
The Frankel IHBH and research laboratory of Dr. Anthony Rosenzweig in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI are in search of an exceptional Animal Models Core Specialist to provide full oversight and management of our animal models core, designated animal research spaces and assist with high-level animal census and cage management. The institute is situated in the heart of Michigan Medicine at the North Campus Research Complex in a newly renovated laboratory building within steps of a multitude of research resources, easy access to collaborators, and research services. A growing interest surrounds common mechanisms affecting both the heart and the brain, and how the organs signal to each other in health and disease. The animal research component is rapidly expanding and in addition to surgical models, exercise models, general procedures, etc. we are adding neurocognitive and behavioral testing.

Responsibilities*
The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting animal research initiatives at the Frankel Institute for Heart and Brain Health (IHBH). The primary responsibilities include managing neurocognitive and behavioral testing facilities, surgical suites, and procedure rooms. They will oversee the setup and maintenance of specialized equipment, such as echo machines, blood pressure monitors, and DEXA scanners.
Key responsibilities for this position include:
+ **Animal Care and Protocols Expertise:** Possess a strong foundation in general animal care, handling, and familiarity with animal research protocols. Experience with neurocognitive testing techniques is essential.
+ **Facilities Management:** Assume primary responsibility for the upkeep and functioning of neurocognitive, behavioral and performance testing spaces, surgical suites, and six procedure rooms.
+ **Training and Compliance Oversight:** Ensure all personnel (20+) have completed and maintain appropriate training in equipment use, animal handling, and compliance with research protocols.
+ **Equipment Support and Guidance:** Provide oversight and guidance on the use of neurocognitive testing equipment, software, and techniques. Assist in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
+ **Monitoring and Reporting:** Regularly monitor room usage, cleanliness, and equipment functionality. Report any issues related to space cleanliness, equipment usage, compliance, or animal handling to Lab Managers and Principal Investigators (PIs).
+ **Core Management and Coordination:** Serve as a central resource for all labs within the IHBH, supporting the setup of new equipment and offering maintenance and troubleshooting services. Track and manage all equipment service and maintenance agreements and contracts, annual PM and inspections when necessary. Provide guidance on SOPs related to behavioral tests and equipment usage. Offer assistance with colony maintenance as needed.
+ **Research Support:** Aid in the development of research protocols and the integration of different animal models. Provide input on new equipment purchases to enhance animal research capabilities.
Required Qualifications*
+ An advanced degree in biology, neuroscience or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of animal experience and 5 years of laboratory management experience.
+ The role requires a strong work ethic, great organization, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
+ The position requires understanding of general animal care and research involving animals, general neurocognitive and behavioral testing environments
+ Safety, compliance, EHS, ULAM and IACUC inspections, controlled substance management, anesthesia station compliance
Desired Qualifications*
+ Experience with surgical and procedure station set-ups and equipment
+ Experience with neurocognitive and behavioral testing equipment and protocols

This position is M-F onsite at NCRC, preferred work schedule 9-5pm
Background Screening
