    Working/Functional Title

     

    Surgery Nurse (FT3)

    Position Summary

    Provides care for ill and injured animals in the Surgery unit with occasional work in Radiology, Anesthesia, Emergency and Critical Care. Instructs and demonstrates techniques to students, maintains supplies, equipment and hospital cleanliness.

    Minimum Requirements

    Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.

    Desired Qualifications

    Experience as a veterinary technician in an educational setting.

    Summary of Physical Demands

    Will be required to lift medical equipment and animals into cages; carry animals between cages and exam tables/gurneys; push carts containing animals and equipment to other areas of the hospital; climb stairs carrying lab samples; restrain animals. Lifting of up to 50lbs individually or 150lbs as a team.

    Summary of Health Risks

    Working with animals or unfixed tissue. May wear respirator. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases.
