    This position serves as a Transportation Supervisor I in the Surry County Roadside Environmental Unit located within Division 11. Employee will supervise one or more crews and help plan, organize, and schedule work activities, materials, and equipment needs for crews. Work activities include, but are not limited to, pesticide applications to highway rights-of-way, seeding and mulching, tree pruning/removal, and the installation and maintenance of plant beds and the NC Wildflower Program throughout Division 11. Employee will be required to ensure pesticide applications adhere to NCDA Pesticide rules and regulations and established NCDOT policies and procedures. Employee will be responsible for assisting management with the counsel and discipline of employees; maintaining accurate time sheets by tracking man hours, equipment hours, inventory used, location and work accomplished; adjusting work assignments; training employees on-the-job; performing daily safety meeting with crews; and conducting performance reviews. This position must routinely determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish standard work assignments. Employee will assist higher level supervisors with investigating and answering concerns from the public and recommend solutions. Employee will also be responsible for snow and ice removal at rest areas and on state- maintained road system; inspecting contract crews performing landscape operations for NCDOT; and installing and maintaining storm water devices. Duties and functions must be performed with minimal direct supervision.

    + Experience supervising crews performing landscape functions pertaining to erosion control, landscape installation and landscape bed maintenance

    + Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations

    + Experience applying pesticides to highway rights-of-way by both mechanical and hand

    + Experience in record keeping, including tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of material used

    + Experience in pesticide application methods and procedures

    Additional Expectations:

    The recommended candidate must have the ability to supervise personnel, as well as interpret and apply personnel policies. They must have the ability to communicate effectively with all personnel, the general public, other governmental agencies, and contractors. They must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, keep accurate records, and use a computer. An NCDA and CS Pesticide License with appropriate endorsements is required. Position may require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and times of emergency. Work in this position will require exposure to all types of weather conditions as well as climbing, bending, walking, and operating equipment on uneven terrain and slopes. This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes are required.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
