Job Summary
The City of Baytown is seeking an experienced Superintendent of Natural Resource Programs to lead stewardship of our coastal and wetland ecosystems, including the Baytown Nature Center and Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education Center. In this leadership role, you’ll plan and direct habitat restoration, manage critical environmental programs, ensure regulatory compliance, and oversee operations staff committed to preserving more than 450 acres of vibrant marshes, habitat trails, and wildlife. The Superintendent of Natural Resource Programs is responsible for the operation of the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education and Recreation Center (WERC) and the Baytown Nature Center (BNC). Oversees the programming of both facilities, including daily maintenance and construction projects, education programming and outreach programming. Coordinates out-of-town outreach activities, including travel, quotes and contracting for catfish and outreach programs. Coordinates international travel and programming for EPIC experience. Coordinates and oversees fundraising activities, including grants, gifts and active fundraising. Serves as City of Baytown liaison to GCCISD, Lee College, citizen committees, stage agencies and various interest groups. Coordinates with the Education Coordinator and Naturalist to develop educational activities at WERC and BNC. Coordinates statewide outreach programming and partnerships with state agencies and other interested parties. Plans and oversees annual Nurture Nature Festival and all other public events.
Duties
+ Coordinates efforts for design, development, and operation of educational programs at both WERC and BNC with Education Coordinator and Naturalist. Maintains Education Permits through Texas Parks and Wildlife and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Dept. Plans Annual Nurture Nature Festival and other public events.
+ Establishes operational policies. Develops and maintains a vision and strategic plan for long term direction. Performs and monitors all budgetary activities for the division.
+ Maintains a strong relationship with financial partners (Goose Creek CISD, Lee College, ExxonMobil, ChevronPhillips, Covestro, Rotary Club, Friends of the Wetlands Center, Friends of the Baytown Nature Center, Chandler Arboretum Committee, etc.) to ensure financial viability.
+ Coordinates the maintenance requirements and special projects requirements for both WERC and BNC with Parks and Planning Divisions.
+ Leads and coordinates fund-raising activities, including grant writing. Responsible for public relations and outreach, including public speaking engagements.
+ Performs personnel related duties, including hiring, training, coaching, performance evaluations, and discipline.
+ Coordinates travel, contracting, billing, and scheduling for division programs, including Wetlands Wagon Outreach Program and international conservation experience.
+ Leads education sessions when needed. Participates in outreach programs. Monitor ambassador animal husbandry with Education Coordinator.
+ Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
+ Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or institution in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, or related field.
+ Five years of experience in a professional level environmental projects related role.
+ Demonstrated prior supervisory experience.
+ Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days).
OR
+ An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred:
+ Master’s Degree from an accredited college or institution in Biology, Zoology, Environmental sciences or related field.
+ Public relations skills/experience.
+ Grant writing skills/experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to perform independently, organize, schedule, and plan. Knowledge of environmental programs and local, State and Federal laws and the ability to design and implement them. Knowledge and skills in budgeting, administration, public relations, fundraising, and grant writing. Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Ability to get along appropriately with co-workers and the public. Comfort and knowledge in handling and caring for ambassador animals, including snakes, baby alligators, invertebrates and birds.
