    The Assistant Director for Staff Development and Student Success leads Residential Life's student staff development, professional staff development, and academic initiatives.

     

    For staff development, this position oversees the recruitment, on-boarding, training, and continued development of Residential Life student and professional staff. Residential Life employs 18 Residence Hall Directors, 28 Graduate Assistants, and over 200 Student Staff (Resident Assistants, Student Assistants, Work-Study).

     

    This role serves as the liaison to key campus partners including Academic Advising, Honors College, Living-Learning Communities, Undergraduate Education, International Student and Scholar Services, Educational Opportunity Program, and Registrar. They lead the University's award-winning Residential Life Retention Program.

     

    This position reports to the Associate Director of Residential Life. It is a live-off position and participates in on-duty emergency backup coverage.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    + Lead Residential Life's Staff Development, including recruitment, on-boarding, training, and continued development of student and professional staff.

    + Design and implement hiring processes

    + Create student staff and professional staff training schedules for August and January

    + Chair Professional Staff Development Committee including

    + Co-Chair RD Search Committee and GA Search Committee

    + In-direct functional supervision of 4-6 Residence Hall Directors who are responsible for Staff Development on their living area.

    + Maintain all Staff Development records and ensure effective communication for staffing changes

    + Create and conduct training materials (i.e. presentations, handbook, Sharepoint)

    + Create and implement staff engagement events

    + Serve as department's representative and point person for Handshake software platform, including coordination and implementation of staff access, training, and use

    + Lead Residential Life Student Success efforts to enhance academic achievement

    + Coordinate Department retention initiatives including academically at-risk residential students, unregistered residential students, and residential student academic dismissals. Will coordinate processes that increase retention of unregistered residential students

    + Collaborate with key academic partners including Academic Advising, Honors College, Living-Learning Communities, Undergraduate Education, International Student and Scholar Services, Educational Opportunity Program, and Registrar.

    + Identify and implement mechanisms to enhance residential student success

    + Serve as department's representative and point person for EAB Navigate software platform, including coordination and implementation of staff access, training, and use

    + Attend and assist with campus events (i.e. Convocation, Candlelighting, Munch with the Majors, Open Houses, Orientation)

    + Manage Staff Development budget and purchasing

    + Provide on-duty emergency backup coverage for professional staff and students during academic year, recesses, and summer, on a rotating basis.

    + Participate in an on-call rotation schedule that ensures emergency backup coverage for Residential Life staff during evenings (fall & spring semester), weekends (fall & spring semester), academic recesses (winter intersession & spring break), and summer months.

    + Be prepared to respond to urgent student issues, including health or safety concerns, crises, facilities issues, or incidents within the residential community, providing guidance and support as needed.

    + Collaborate with other on-duty staff to ensure continuity of care and a cohesive response to emergency situations.

    + Maintain a strong understanding of departmental protocols, campus resources, and crisis management strategies to ensure effective and calm handling of emergencies.

    + Work during Openings and Closings

    + Other reasonable duties as assigned

    Functional and Supervisory Relationships:

    + Reports to Associate Director of Residential Life

    + Supervises the following positions: Staff Development Resident Directors and Graduate Assistants

    + May supervise employees as assigned

    + Demonstrated problem solving, organization, customer service, and writing skills

    + Ability to work independently.

    Job Requirements:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + Bachelor's degree in Higher Education or a related field from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

    + Minimum of 3 years full timefull-time work experience in Higher Education or a related field.

    + Supervisory experience.

    + Experience with Microsoft Office (Teams, Sharepoint, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Master's degree in Higher Education or related field from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

    + Experience presenting to a diverse population of students and parents.

    Working Environment:

    + The working environment for this role is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring a blend of office-based tasks, team collaboration, and occasional campus-wide engagement. The work setting includes both administrative office spaces, where meetings, staff oversight, and planning occur, and residential or program locations for training, staff supervision, and event execution. Given the nature of Residential Life, there is often a need for flexibility and adaptability, as responsibilities shift throughout the academic year, with peak periods during orientations, program planning, and recruitment cycles.

    + Physically, the role may involve occasional standing or walking for events, meetings, and campus programs, with periods of office-based tasks that require extended sitting and computer use. The physical demands are moderate and include moving between various office spaces, residential areas, and campus event venues.

    + Mentally, the role is demanding and requires multitasking, problem-solving, and strategic decision-making. Leading diverse staff, and coordinating department-wide processes requires high levels of concentration and attention to detail. The role also involves significant interpersonal interaction, including training, supervising staff, and serving as a liaison to various campus partners, which demands strong communication, emotional intelligence, and conflict-resolution skills. The ability to work under pressure, handle emergencies, and respond to unforeseen challenges is essential, particularly when providing backup coverage during emergencies or crisis situations.
