    Position Summary

    Agency Summary

    The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) aims to improve residents’ quality of life through bettering public spaces and infrastructure, and through providing excellent public services. With a focus on multi-modal connectivity, thriving green spaces, meaningful capital improvements, universal accessibility, and collaborative public and private partnerships, DPW builds and maintains public infrastructure and park land; manages solid waste collection; and keeps the City’s entire vehicle fleet rolling. One of the largest City agencies, “Team DPW” commits itself to effective efficient customer service for residents and visitors to Indianapolis.

     

    Position is responsible for supervising the work of personnel and equipment in traffic signal operations, supporting the Superintendent of the Traffic Signal Operations section. Traffic signal operations is responsible for more than 2,000 traffic signal assets. This position will be required to effectively schedule various maintenance tasks, special event projects, and most importantly, ensure proper operation of this type of critical infrastructure during emergency events such as weather or traffic accidents.

    Position Responsibilities

    + Supervise daily activities of a highly technical, diverse group of signal technicians responsible for the maintenance of various types of city infrastructure.

    + Plan and execute various signal related maintenance projects.

    + Communicate with contractors and interpret DPW Engineering plan sets to provide quality control for capital projects with traffic assets.

    + Completing weekly payroll including scheduling.

    + Address weather and traffic emergencies affecting infrastructure, 24hrs a day.

    + Scheduling, providing, and developing different types of training and ensuring crews are properly equipped and educated to perform all job duties.

    + Responsible for all section vehicles. Schedule maintenance, perform daily inspections, and ensure fleet is in good working order.

    + Create and maintain various databases of traffic asset information such as timings, inventory and service records.

    + Make decisions as operational needs arise in the field.

    + The ability to prioritize and make confident decisions will be a must.

    Qualifications

    High School education or equivalent and (2) years of supervisory experience of 6 or more employees or (4) years previous work experience as an Electrician or in a related field. Have and hold a valid Indiana Driver's License during employment. Possess analytical and problem-solving abilities and be able to establish a good relationship with employees and the public. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Proficiency with Microsoft Office required. Ability to understand regulations and standards regarding the maintenance of traffic control devices. Basic knowledge of electrical concepts and devices.

    Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications

    4 years previous experience in traffic operations or engineering or as an electrician or similar field involving electronics. Knowledge of the Federal/Indiana Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

     

    Knowledge of materials and equipment used for the installation and maintenance of the three primary types of traffic control devices: Signals, Signs, and Markings. Ability to understand and interpret construction plans, engineering drawings and diagrams of the physical characteristics of an intersection and/or a segment of a street. Ability to recognize, interpret and apply State and Federal guidelines while maintaining transportation assets throughout Marion County.
