    Summary This position is located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, Security Divisions in Washington D.C. The primary purpose of this position is to perform various security related functions at the AFRH. Responsibilities As a Security Guard, you will: Respond to emergency and or routine calls within the AFRH. Tour the entire facility of the AFRH on foot and or by patrol vehicle. Be involved with a safety program within the grounds of the Home. Control personnel access by monitoring the identification of individuals entering controlled areas. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Must be U.S. Citizen or U.S. National Qualifications You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment. Physical Requirements: The work requires physical exertion such as walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting items weighing 50 pounds or less, and driving a motor vehicle. Work may also require long periods of surveillance at fixed and or mobile positions. Medical Requirements: The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. Agencies may establish additional, job-related physical or medical requirements provided that the specific position(s) involves the arduous or hazardous duties to which the requirements relate. Specialized Experience for the GS-5: You must have fifty-two (52) weeks of experience at the GS-04 level or equivalent in other public or private sectors, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position includes: Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; OR Maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Forces or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular basis. In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-5, you must have been at the GS-4 level for 52 weeks. Selectees will be subject to the AFRH Tuberculosis Surveillance Program. Possess a valid state motor vehicle operator's license or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) upon appointment and maintain a valid license while you occupy the position. Shift Work: This facility operates on a 24 hour per day, three-shift basis. Assignment to a specific shift cannot be guaranteed. The successful applicant must be available to work on all three shifts on a rotational basis. Because the AFRH's mission requires uninterrupted, direct human support and medical care for its Residents, this position is considered essential for continuing AFRH operations. Therefore, the incumbent is expected to arrive for duty on time, as scheduled, and to complete the assigned tour during emergency situations such as hazardous weather. The AFRH ethics program promotes the highest standards of ethical conduct for all employees. As a federal employee, you will be subject to the Standards of Ethical Conduct, and the U.S. criminal conflict of interest statutes. As an AFRH employee, you will also be subject to the AFRH Supplemental Ethics Regulations which restrict the extent to which a AFRH employee can engage in certain activities and hold certain investments. Depending on your position, you may also be required to file a public or confidential financial disclosure report which must be filed within 30 days of your appointment as an employee of AFRH. Upon your new appointment, you will receive guidance regarding your ethics obligations. You will also be required to attend a mandatory ethics training within 3 months of your appointment.
