    Summary The Maintenance Mechanic works under the direct supervision of the Maintenance and Repair Supervisor at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital and Clinics. The James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital and Clinics is a tertiary hospital and is one of the busiest and most complex healthcare systems in the nation. Responsibilities Major duties include but are not limited to the following: Perform Carpentry work by operating and using a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools. Perform regular maintenance activities and preventative maintenance. Independently plan, layout, and completes carpentry projects. Repairs and installs flooring, hard & suspended ceilings, drywall, metal studs, and track. Repairs and installs grout, concrete, block, and similar masonry assignments. Repairs and installs doors, frames, and door hardware. Performs light plumbing, electrical, and utility systems work in order to identify, troubleshoot, and assist with maintenance and repairs. Uses general and specialized tools and equipment of various building trades. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic platforms. He/she often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to carry over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: The Maintenance Mechanic will work within the medical facility's operating functions and must use all appropriate safety tools and clothing to protect himself/herself, other staff, visitors, and patients. Other assignments can be in remote areas, such as sub-basement, machinery rooms, rooftops, roads, and walkways. Working conditions will require contact with various fumes, which may require a respirator and will include working with flammable and toxic liquids. Incumbent is subject to burns from steam lines and heating equipment. He/she is subject to unsanitary working areas, such as waste traps and plumbing lines. Will be exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Must always be aware of safety hazards and know what actions should be taken to avoid them. He/she must observe all local and national Safety Codes. Must know and comply with all the safety factors of the trade to prevent fires and injury to patients and personnel. Work is both inside and outside. The Maintenance Mechanic will entail exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Must wear a respirator and disposable clothing, including coveralls and covers for head, hands, and feet when working in areas of possible asbestos decontamination. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
