Global Legal plays an important role in protecting HSBC’s reputation, helping to safeguard the organisation by providing robust and comprehensive advice on legal issues and risks. Our lawyers advise senior management and the Global Businesses and Functions. They offer a range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all the countries and territories in which HSBC operates.
The General Counsel, US Litigation, Regulatory Enforcement and Investigations; and Deputy Head of Global Investigations provides expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks faced by the area of coverage are identified, reported and mitigated. This role will report to the Global General Counsel, Litigation, Regulatory Enforcement and Investigations; and Global Head of Investigations.
Responsibilities
+ Oversee and manages all aspects of the contentious litigation, regulatory enforcement and investigations portfolio for HSBC in the United States, aiming to achieve the best possible outcomes for the Bank
+ Act as the Deputy to the Global Head of Investigations, overseeing and managing the Global Internal Investigations team, which deals with all investigations that involve significant legal, regulatory and reputational risk
+ Provide legal and strategic advice to the Global and U.S. Boards of Directors (Board), and senior management regarding contentious matters that present the most material legal and reputational risk to the Bank; attends and presents before various Board committees at the request of the Global General Counsel, Litigation, Regulatory Enforcement and Investigations
+ Ensure that relevant litigation, regulatory enforcement and investigations matters are properly accounted for and disclosed
+ Undertake root cause analyses and “lessons learned” to minimise and prevent recurrence of non-financial risks; advises on consequence management, where appropriate, for notable events involving material operational losses
+ Evaluate and responds to changes in legal and regulatory requirements as they arise and proactively identifies legal and other risks where relevant and partners with other stakeholders across HSBC to mitigate those risks
+ Set relevant policies and procedures to ensure that Legal's role in the second line of defence can be executed
+ Provide and manages counsel for assigned areas of responsibility, including matters that are complex or have potential for legal, financial and/or reputational impact
+ Participate as an active member of the Global Head of Litigation, Regulatory Enforcement and Investigation’s Leadership team in setting the strategic direction and priorities for the LREI function as a whole
+ Participate as a member of the US General Counsel’s Leadership team
+ Provide strong, proactive leadership including guidance, challenge, support, and development for c.11 lawyers and legal professionals across the United States
+ Manage external and internal legal costs within Resource and Financial Planning limits
For this role, HSBC targets a pay range between $500,000.00 and $600,000.00
The final fixed pay offer will depend on the candidate and a number of variables, including but not limited to, role responsibilities, skill set, depth of experience and education, licensing/certification requirements, internal relativity, and specific work location.

Qualifications
You'll likely have the following qualifications to succeed in this role:
+ US-qualified Lawyer, expected to have a minimum of 15 years’ experience in handling contentious matters in multiple jurisdictions (e.g. UK, EU, HK)
+ Practical experience in dealing with multiple criminal and regulatory authorities is critical (e.g., US DOJ, FRB, OCC, FDIC, SEC, CFTC, etc.)
+ Prior government experience in criminal or regulatory enforcement is a plus, e.g., as a prosecutor or enforcement attorney
+ Strong familiarity with global financial institutions, including working knowledge and experience dealing with banking products, securities, and derivatives
+ Significant experience handling enforcement investigations, including proven track record of constructive engagement with multiple regulatory authorities
+ Broad familiarity with banking and securities laws; anti-fraud and market abuse laws; and competition and antitrust laws
+ Strong familiarity with operational risk management and identifying and mitigating non-financial risk
+ Strong knowledge of accounting, disclosure, and prudential stress-testing requirements
+ Extensive experience advising and influencing senior business executives; strong communication and networking skills; ability to navigate complex global organizations and build in-depth relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders
+ Strong oral and written communication skills
+ Strong track record of leadership and proven ability to lead and manage teams, including overseeing budgeting, headcount, talent development, and succession planning
