Lead the way in bringing The Strong’s iconic exhibits to life by overseeing a creative team focused on developing and delivering captivating, live performances and one-of-a-kind, interactive activities in the museum’s exhibits.
The director of actor-interpretation will lead the all-new actor-interpretation team at The Strong, presenting performances and activities that engage guests in playful narratives and encourage them to undertake special quests that celebrate collaboration, playfulness, and other meaningful character traits. The director of actor-interpretation will lead the team in enhancing guests’ experiences through thoughtfully crafted interactions and playful interpretive engagement.
The director of actor-interpretation will collaborate closely with the education, public programs, and exhibits teams as they work to develop new experiences that serve a diverse and ever-growing museum audience.
This position requires a highly motivated, creative, and organized leader who can inspire the team to exceed goals and our guests’ expectations. To achieve this, the director of actor interpretation will keep up to date with advances, trends, and other subject matter related to guest-focused interactions, theater, children’s literature, museum studies, and other relevant fields.

+ With the guidance of the assistant vice president for education and public programs, create and oversee the delivery of a variety of interactive programs and performances, including quests and other experiences taking place within museum exhibits.
+ Manage the work of the interpretive actors: monitor and assess performance, coach for improvement, and participate in various personnel procedures such as hiring, training, goal setting, discipline, dismissal, and other related actions.
+ Think broadly and systematically about how programs and experiences developed and offered by the actor-interpretation team reflect the museum’s mission and how such programs can and should relate to museum collections, interpretation, and IDEA initiatives.
+ Oversee all actor-interpreter logistical activities, including, but not limited to, use of supplies, budgets and staff, coordination of external talent and entertainment, and training of program staff.
+ Monitor and review programming to ensure that schedules are met, guidelines are adhered to, and activities exceed satisfactory quality.
+ Create a guest-centric culture and model relationship-building skills in all interactions. Ensure that the guest experience at events is based on hospitality by establishing systems and monitoring adherence to program policies, procedures, standards, and best practices.
+ Develop and maintain written procedures for all activities within the scope of responsibilities.
+ Oversee budgeting, including payroll and other expenses.
+ Accept special projects as assigned by the assistant vice president for education and public programs.
+ Lead actor-interpreter team meetings and attend general staff meetings, and others, as needed.
+ Participate in all required museum trainings.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The candidate may have any combination of education and experience but should possess the required skills and knowledge for successful performance. Our general minimum requirements are:
+ Bachelor’s degree in theater studies, education, museum studies, or related field.
+ Five years’ progressively responsible experience in theatrical production or production management.
+ Understanding of different theatrical styles and genres, and the ability to adapt to various production contexts.
+ Supervisory experience.
These qualifications are considered a plus:
+ Marketing and public relations skills.
